RE: Duling is transferring
I think if you take Draymond Green off the Warriors and put him on the Cavs the Cavs win the first two matchups.
In fact, I think OKC beats GS in the 2016 WCF and Durant probably never even goes to GS. If we stayed put at 33 and 34 I'm 100% convinced the Cavs would not have passed on Green twice based on comments Gilbert made before the draft and since and his MSU connection.

Who knows what they would've done with the other pick but I doubt they would've taken Crowder because of how similar he is to Green that wouldn't have made sense. However, Middleton and Barton were still on the board so that other pick could've ended up being real good too.

Equally important, when I'm saying if the Cavs understood how to evaluate 3/4 tweeners I also mean we don't take Anthony Bennett. The #2 and #3 picks in that draft we're Oladipo and Otto Porter. Both are talented two way players that would've played a valuable role on those teams. Oladipo replacing the injured Irving and Green replacing the injured Love in the 2015 finals sounds a lot better than Delly and Thompson.

So to answer your question, yes I think it would've made a big difference for the Cavs and the NBA landscape would look entirely different right now.

1) Duling is a tweener position wise. athletic freak at the high school level who could completely take over a game. But at this level he wasn't big enough to play the 4 or 5 and didn't have the guards skills or shot to play the 3.

2) Rob is trying to win now and relies heavily on juniors and seniors. So i'd guess if your defense is suspect, take poor shots and body language runs hot and cold that's probably not a good recipe for a budding relationship with the HC.

Agreed. Plus he only shot 41% from the free throw line, which as everyone knows limits minutes, especially at the end of games.

Can’t agree more on the Bennett pick but I still don’t see Green or Crowder making that big a difference. I guess we will never know.

So all this talk about BJ Duling not being the right size for the MAC at 6'7", 235, I got to disagree. Jimmy Hall was 6'8" 235 and ended up being 3 time All-MAC first team. That inch doesn't make a lot of difference.

Jimmy Hall did not jump very well, but BJ could jump out of the gym. BJ has a B1G body and IMHO, needed someone to work with him and define his role on the floor. Since I was not at practices, this comment may be out of line but again, IMHO, he should have been taught how to post up.

Duling will always be a mystery to me. I'm sure the staff tried to coach him up. Over my many decades following the sport I've seen plenty who seemed sure things not perform well at the next step. Lots of times it's a mystery as to why not. It happens, though.

Ditto this ... Being the biggest thing in high school is often a curse as it masks someone's true abilities, both positively and negatively.

Duling in high school 'posted up' with brute force and athleticism, primarily against players half his bulk. In college, his bulk on the block was/is of little use without the true fundamental post-up skills of a Jimmy Hall.

What this shows, really, is the lack of baseline fundamentals he lacked in high school to score and manuver on the block showing itself on the college level vs. players his size or bigger. Clearly, a redshirt year was needed early on and he did not get it, for any variety of reasons.

Also, no fault of his own, it seems he was recruited to be more of a 4/3-type player and, again, never truly got to play or be coached at that position because - my opinion - Kent seemed to need him more as a 5-man.

Perhaps by transferring, and getting a redshirt year to dedicate himself to one position or another, he will blossom.

I agree with your premise. His size should be adequate for the 4 in the MAC. Hall and Duling are physically very different stories. For NBA pre draft measurements they usually talk about "standing reach" as being the more important indicator if a post player is undersized than height. This is the measurements of how far you can reach standing flat footed. No idea what Hall's standing reach is, but I would be willing to bet he's on par with 6'10"+ guys. Hall was blessed with some ridiculously long arms so he played a lot bigger than 6'8".

RE: Duling is transferring
From what I saw in the games I was at - when Duling was on the floor, he wanted to use his athleticism and it wasn't always the right thing. He'd jump to block a shot and get called for a foul; or jump for a rebound and foul someone. Success for a 4-5 forward is largely being in the right position at the right time, and that's something that needs to be learned. If you're out of position for a shot or rebound, you get off your feet to make a play, and half the time you get called for a foul

Curious, where did he end up transferring to?

Good question, Polish Hammer. He left the Kent State basketball team, but he never resurfaced anywhere, to the best of my knowledge.

He hasn't hit my radar either - though I can tell you that Akiean Frederick played in Tbilisi, Georgia (the Georgia in the Caucasus mountains) last year and scored 13.1 ppg in 14 games.
