The rumored terms of the Dundon deal showed desperation on part of AAF. I believe he had no intention of keeping the league open. The player tracking tech was their best asset and he got it. I wonder how much cash he actually expended?

CUSA needs to hire whoever secured the TV coverage for the AAF.

Dundon lost $70m of his investment. I can understand pulling the plug at that point. As to the app, he could have bought/designed one for far less than he lost.

The only ones making money from this league from now on are the lawyers.

Yikes, hadn't seen that number. Wow. Gotta wonder what he was thinking.

He is probably thinking that he now has a nice big tax write off for the next several years. Privately owned sports teams have nearly always been operated as tax shelters for wealthy owners whose main businesses make their real income. Those astronomical player salaries (for us) just add to their depreciation write offs.

My hope is that the next time a snake oil salesman comes along with a new football league not named NFL the city will just say thanks but no thanks. This has gotten ridiculous

Dundon thought he could strong arm the NFLPA into making a deal when he didn't have any leverage. AAF was up front when he bought the team that they thought it wouldn't be until 2020 or 2021 that they'd work out the NFLPA deal. I do think this is about the technology angle, however it seems like several of the sources within the AAF don't agree with that.

If I'm an NFL practice squad player then I'm thankful that the NFLPA stood their ground. You get like 550k just to practice, and the AAF wanted you to come play actual games for $70k.

The WLAF fizzled slowly by first going all Europe.

The USFL shut the doors after the settlement for $3.

The Americans played in and won the only World Bowl in 1974.....after the game, the Jefferson County sheriff was in the locker room to confiscate equipment and uniforms. The Vulcans and the '75 version of the WFL folded the Monday after the Vulcans beat the Memphis Southmen and Csonka, Kiick, and Warfield here in Bham.

Pretty embarrassing not making it through a season.

No matter how you slice it.

I thought their playoffs was supposed to be this weekend.

Didn't realize they had 2 weeks left in the season.

Have you forgotten the WLAF which was developed by the NFL? B'ham has been the victim of both the NFL and CFL while seeking to support pro football. In nearly every case, the city showed good support but the leagues folded or walked away.
BTW, One of those "snake oil salesmen" from the USFL days is now President of the USA.

Players salaries are no different than any other salary. It’s a cost of doing business and completely legitimate thing to not be taxed on.

He wanted the gambling technology the AAF owned and spent $70 million to acquire it. A fraction of its worth on the open market

The app seems to not have gotten great reviews. I'm guessing there is patented tech there that can be implemented in different formats. Mobile betting on individual players and plays has an enormous potential market, particularly world-wide with soccer.

My wife teaches the daughter of an Iron employee that moved his family from New York to Birmingham for the job. A sweet kid that misses home and talked up her Dad's team at school.

She was just starting to settle in and this happens. A very tough, disappointing week for some folks. We should relate. Not gonna mention their names of course but to those on here that regularly pray, please lift this family up.

Thanks

Looks like the AAF has it's own version of the USFL's DT -f**ks everyone else out of a job for their own personal reasons of greed.

I fervently hope this family will find employment in Alabama. It is published that many of our state's new job opportunities are being filled by "business refugees" - by internal migration from failed jobs elsewhere in the state. In order to avert the loss of a seat in Congress, we need population growth, not just internally shifting migration.
