Pollen.
Auburn basketball fans are like pollen. You didn't see any a month ago, but suddenly they're everywhere and giving me a headache.

RE: Pollen.
But unlike Auburn fans, none here are jealous of pollen. Seriously, I think they have always been there but until recently lacked any motivation to make themselves known. Perhaps now they can begin to act like UAB and Bama football fans.

I'm an Auburn alum but grew up a UAB basketball fan. While I was at school there in the early 2Ks no one cared about AU basketball and in the decade that followed no one cared. Now that they have the ultimate shyster as their coach and are having unprecedented success, all Auburn fans are now "huge basketball fans." Frankly, it sickens me to see.

Winning is exciting and entertaining and always draws a bigger crowd. Particularly when you win against talented, competitive opponents.
We should try it. Minus the corrupt coach.

Same here. I sat through every Barbee game as a student, and nobody showed up to those games unless it was against Kentucky. Even a few years ago there were 10-15 people at the Tiger Walk before the game at Bartow. This season had a few hundred people.

I will tell you like this, I am a fan of the Blazers, But growing up in Alabama, I was a Auburn Fan before becoming a UAB fan so, I must tell you that's what the Final Four does for you, unless you are ignorant you have to cheer for their success. I remain a Blazer fan appreciate their success and yes, if and when Auburn and UAB play, I will pull for the Blazers but the tigers are in the Final Four and that's Huge.

RE: Pollen.
My feelings about other teams is based on the effect their outcome will have on UAB's standing. In the case of Auburn in the Final Four, the outcome will be irrelevant to UAB's program so I can pull for the team from Alabama to win it all. Indirectly, it might even enhance the status of the sport in our state. That would be good for the relevance of all state programs. We might be able to keep more of our top HS players in the state.

In a fair world maybe.
In a world where they get $42 million for conference affiliation compared to our $1 million at most and their several million in NCAA football playoffs compared to our zero it is difficult to keep up with them.

That was my point in earlier threads that those wealthy programs don't (may not) HAVE TO CHEAT, they are able to attract the best rated players by supporting them by spending about $200,000 per athlete annually on facilities and amenities (Bama recently announced a $5million enhancement of its athletic nutrition facilities. Considering that there may be recruits who were on their HS Federal School Lunch Program, this could be like going to Heaven)

The wealthy programs DEFINITELY CHEAT. Just because UAT has a Ft Knox, they have to spend the money to outbid and attrracr from UGA, FSU, TexasA&M, etc....
if its not handshake envelopes, its pouring that money into rebuilding weight rooms every year, waterfalls in the pool and Dave&Busters arcades in the football facility.

Things like "handshake envelopes" are usually coming from boosters who like to brag to each other in their luxury skyboxes about who they have helped. The school programs can stick to those other things you mention which are not NCAA violations, but they do help compete for recruits.
UAB's new football facility buys it some time before it will have to add new features for its football program to stay current with its contemporaries in G5 conferences. Back when the FOB was first opened, I asked on BlazerTalk "OK, What do we need to build NEXT?" All I got was the forum equivalent of blank stares. It was like "You mean this is not all we will ever need to build?" So I ask again, what do we need to build next to prepare UAB FB for the 2020s?

Then call me ignorant. Why would I cheer for their success. Their success does nothing for me (as a UAB fan) or the school. Lets see how ready Auburn will be to play us NOW since they're basketball creditably has risen and ours continues to slide downward.
All I've seen are people, locally, trying to connect UAB to Auburn's success and ride the wave. It's actually pathetic when People tweet or post UAB's record against March Madness teams. It's like "look at me. We're over here too."
As I've said before and I'll continue to say on here. If you like Auburn or ua, fine. Cheer for them. But don't try to guilt or force the rest of us to root for them.
AIN'T. GONNA. HAPPEN.

Haley McCleney played softball at Mortimer Jordan and later on at Alabama.
She put out a tweet the other day saying she hoped Auburn lost by 60.
My type person.

Yup. I watch them both for a chance to see them lose. Sweet, sweet tears of their sadness. To hell with them, Troy, USA, and the rest of CUSA to boot.
I do like the UAH Chargers when they aren't playing UAB.

RE: Pollen.
Supporting Auburn as the very first Alabama basketball team to play in any NCAA Final Four only makes sense for those who want the sport to be noticed by state fans. The UAB Blazers have a stake in this too since we are among the struggling basketball programs searching for fans to love us. In Alabama, football does not have that problem. I hope Auburn wins two games and comes home the NCAA Champion. It will benefit UAB in the future.

How? Programs struggle for fans because the teams struggle to attain national stature and attention. Auburn is the first to be nationally relevant in a long time. To the victors go the spoils (earned honestly or not).
I don't see how it will benefit UAB at all. If anything, it will make scheduling AU more difficult.
