I'm not sure you get it. MSU is a better school academically and by the perception of corporate recruiters -- he'll get a job making 50k right out of school if he doesn't play basketball. His story, grit, perseverance alone has taught him a great deal and a story he can tell during his interviews -- wherever he goes. He was coached by Tom Izzo. He's got a few connections. He's developed personally and professionally. 17k is absolutely nothing for playing D1 at a bigten school.
Hate to say it but you are right! Great decision learning under a well-known winner like Izzo-- and having him as a reference is PRICELESS. Let's see, playing in front of 500 people and no national exposure or playing in front of millions of people for a school that EVERYONE knows and respects. You just can't put a monetary value on that. His life has been greatly enriched and good for him. He will forever be known as a winner and a fighter. GO MSU beat Texas Tech.

You overrate the value of an undergraduate MSU degree. Greatly.

Goddard hits the nail on the head. The life lessons learned in the MSU basketball program, especially under a demanding coach like Izzo, plus the Izzo connections, are worth WAY WAY more than $17,000. I'm sure he and his parents would say the same.

99+% of his peers will leave school with less opportunities, work ethic, mental toughness, and life experiences as this kid.

High likelihood of success in his future, no matter what he decides to do.

I'm pretty sure that not everyone respects MSU. Like PSU they pretended not to notice that a sexual predator, an employee, was running rampant. Ask those girls and families what they think of MSU. The U President and AD designed in disgrace and they've paid out a half billion dollars in settlements.

When news of the scandal broke the first words out of Izzo's mouth were, "It's been a very difficult week for ME." He then went on to say what great respect he had for the school President who had received information about Nassar as early as 1992.

Terrible situation. Nassar is a despicable monster. But WTF does that have to do with the topic at hand?

I think you called MSU a school everyone knows and respects. That's not accurate.

I went to an EMU - MSU football game back when Rasnick was coach. They were beating us handily and we finally got into the end zone late in the game on a pass to Scheffield. It looked like he stepped out of bounds inside the five, but it was ruled a TD. MSU fans near us went nuts over this meaningless score. I don't respect that.

I’m not slamming the value of an MSU undergrad degree. I don’t respect their institutional ethos for some of the reasons that ljm mentioned, but it’s a fine academic institution.

I just happen to think that most undergrad degrees are interchangeable in the new world. Where you go to grad school is where the prestige/training really pays off. There are a small number of institutions whose bachelor’s degree carry hefty weight — MSU isn’t one of them, IMO.

To be objective, the perceived value of one's bachelor's degree is debatable. Ultimately, that can only be answered by the people who do the hiring in corporate America. The bigger point, I think is his exposure to millions of people and the connections that he will have and the life lessons he will acquire from being coached by Tom Izzo instead of Rob Murphy.
