Ironically, many Democrats and supporters of the FDR turned on him during his presidency. Part of the reason was he was perceived as presiding as a dictator (packing the Supreme Court, running for more than two terms in office), the other being how he switched tune on staying out of World War II.

There had been a long standing tradition of not running for a third term (a precedent set by George Washington) but FDR went ahead and ran for two more terms.
