I would think there would be something more than his dad's tweet to go on. Or did I miss something?

Our beat writer for the DC, Kaleb Carter, just confirmed it. Bowers will be a Huskie

OK. Now I'm happy. Actually, ecstatically happy. Now I can sit here, being ecstatically happy. (Ecstatically is one of my big words for the week.)

Uh ... GO HUSKIES !!!!

RE: QB transfer from Cal
So the real question is, if he picks up where he left off after his full season as starter in 2017, and ends up winning the starting job at NIU, and looks really good in the process, does NIU get picked to finish 3rd or 4th in the West by the pre-season polls? (Only partly kidding)

I was critical of Childers, but I feel sorry for the kid. He's tough and plays hard. I don't know if the lack of offense last year was his fault or if it was the offensive scheme, but give him credit for playing lights out in the second half of the MACC. That is one of my favorite NIU wins, up there with the 2011 MACC over Ohio.

Seems like Hammock is going with a new offense, hopefully it works out.

If Bowers wins the job Childers will have another role eg RB

Change in offense indicated with huddle sted of set-standup-set, but about the rest, I kind of wondered about that too. Childers looked so good in that MACC late-game passing, wonder if the QB-run-oriented offense took something away from his passing. We'd never know with RC, but with THammock we may find out. In any case we have to have a good #2 qb, and the competition will be good for everyone in the QB corps.

Changes the whole "quarterback competition" narrative that many posters called for during the RC days. Not an objection, just a thought. If Bowers is the guy, I'm all for it. Also, an indication of the kind of offense that THammock and Eidsness want to see installed.

I hope coaches stick to their word and everyone has to earn it. Wouldn’t be fair if other qbs don’t actually have a shot to compete for the job. If the kid’s that good, it will be obvious. Never liked when we get a transfer or highly touted recruit and they are handed a job. Sometimes it doesn’t work out so make it fair.

Same. MAC FOTY/MAC CG MVP to backup. If Bowers had 1 year, they could redshirt Childers and he’d start the next 2 years.

Tough situation for him. Hopefully everything works out.

I don't think Bowers will be handed anything. As I said, "...starting QB or at least #1 on the list." No way a QB with that potential picks Northern out of a hat, not with 2 years of eligibility left. And it does change the quarterback competition narrative, I think. If it's #1 on the list, it increases the level and intensity of competition. It also makes #2 more important than just "ok, who else can play if #1 goes down?" That can happen at any moment in any game. I like to believe the coaches were up-front with the competition thing, and Bowers said "ok, I'll show you guys." That's an admirable competitive spirit.

I do think if Bowers comes to NIU, he will be given the opportunity to start. I dont think he will have competition for that job.

Agreed!!! He would not be coming without some type of guarantee that he starts against ISU.

Lots of back & forth on this, but we are pretty sure that he can play immediately and has two years of eligibility, correct?

Great pickup at a position in need. I’m loving the type of talent we are starting to attract to NIU. Sounds like a team ready to make next level moves.... Wonder if he’ll be ready to compete right away and will see snaps at the Spring game.

He's still at Cal until he graduates this Spring, so he will not see any snaps at the Spring Game.

He'll likely come in soon after he graduates and start COMPETING for the starting job, getting a head start prior to this summer. He isn't being promised or handed anything. Anyone who suggests otherwise (and there are at least a couple already) is an idiot, or a troll, or both (or at the very least, irresponsibly and calculatedly inflammatory).

GO HUSKIES! GO NIU!

Its going to be strange since we'll have one QB that's a gunslinger and the rest are running QBs.

Most will move positions to WR or transfer IMO

I’d be shocked if Hall was still a QB by the end of this spring. His strengths are best used w the ball in his hands vs passing. Well see if we have anything w Drake Davis, he’s also considered dual threat but is on the smaller side.

My guess is that it’s going to be Bowers job to lose with Childers, Thompson and Wright battling it out for backup roles. Based on the film I’ve seen though, Jiya May be the only other QB we have that consistent throw the ball accurately. This should be an interesting battle to watch this spring

RE: QB transfer from Cal
I hate long posts, but sometimes ...

I agree with NorthCoast. This "we have a great new starting qb, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy" stuff is stretching way out to the point of (something). I was only talking about how Bowers got here. And he isn't even "here" yet. Some keep posting that Dec. 2018 tweet as "proof." Note the phrases "(undecided at this time)" and "my next destination." The only other thing floating around is his Dad's tweet. I'm NOT being a naysayer, but I'll get excited when I see his name on the roster.

I tried to strike a balance with common sense, saying Bowers wouldn't come to NIU -- to nowhere else, and from a PAC 12 school -- without an ENTICEMENT. This is NOT the same thing as a GUARANTEE. That would severely damage everything THammock & Co. have acomplished so far.

It could be starting out (not starting, as in starting qb) as #1 on the list of qbs, as in his job to lose in practice, scrimmage. That is very COMMON in college fb. And does anyone think THammock is dumb enough to guarantee something so far ahead of Game 1? If Bowers is that good, or that much better than anyone else, it will show in practice, scrimmage.

GO HUSKIES !!!

Agree with others, 'guaranteed' vs. 'very good chance to start' are very different. The thing that makes it even tougher for Bowers to start game 1 is he's not on campus yet (right?), so he won't be with the team until late summer/fall camp, that's not many practices to be ready to take the first snap.
