QB transfer from Cal
(03-30-2019 02:30 AM)MaddDawgz02 Wrote:  Do you guys see Childers leaving?

Bowers is a Pro Style QB and Cal went w other QBs who were more mobile to fit their offense which led to Bowers decision to transfer. Everything I’ve heard is that we are shifting to a more pro style offense (especially with Bowers coming in). Childers couldn’t be farther than a pro style QB so it wouldnt surprise me at all to see him transfer or move to a WR if he stays at NIU.

I’m sure Rod would take him if he wanted to head to Philly

IMO, there is no way THammock got Bowers in here without some kind of enticement r.e. starting QB or at least #1 on the list. Changes the whole "quarterback competition" narrative that many posters called for during the RC days. Not an objection, just a thought. If Bowers is the guy, I'm all for it. Also, an indication of the kind of offense that THammock and Eidsness want to see installed.

RE: QB transfer from Cal
This may be way too much info, but for the technical minded ... 2018 was "was supposed to be the year of the “Bower Hour” wherein Ross Bowers would lead Cal to new heights and be the QB has the team has needed since Jared Goff went #1 overall," according to an Oct. 2018 UWashington preview of their game vs. Cal, published on SBNation.

As to the Cal offense, "Cal runs their version of the spread passing attack. The QB is always in shotgun, and when not in an empty set, will have a running back on his right or left ... (the RB) will usually run a route if he isn’t taking a hand off. Occasionally an H-Back or TE will be lined up in the backfield ... Cal likes to run a lot of RPO as well. Often times the QB and RB will have a zone read play going on, while a 3-receiver bunch on one side will show a screen pass ... They don’t utilize a ton of pre-snap motion ... this attack is designed to stretch zone defenses, and force safeties and corners to pick which receivers to cover. The route combinations required the WR and QB to be on the same page and read things the same way. In theory, like most versions of an air raid or spread passing attack, there should be a receiver to go to on every play. "

May be too much info, but this was the design of Cal OC Beau Baldwin, who was there when Bowers had his big year and 2018 when expectations for Bowers were high.

So, you think maybe possibly NIU is going to some version of the "air raid?"

They’ll compete. Either Childers and the others step up and take the competition head on or they can pout and watch Bowers take the job. Guessing they’re all competitive...

Always want to see competition for position, but I think Thammock & Co. went after Bowers because he fits what they want to do. Bowers had other prospects, I'd imagine. Also, not so much Childers, but Thompson, Hall, Wright were recruited in part because of their (hoped for) running ability to fit into the offense Northern had (note past tense).

Also, how bad was that thumb injury? Didn't have a cast, then did, according to some reports.

What type of proof do we actually have he’s coming to NIU outside of the tweet posted earlier?

I mean, the coaching staff retweeted his Dad’s tweet about it so I’d say the coaching staff confirming it means it’s a done deal

I think that tweet was from his dad. And you're right ... if not, this whole thread is moot. But it sure got people excited, huh?

Had no idea that was his dad. Guess that explains the same last name now.03-idea

RE: QB transfer from Cal
This is pure, idle speculation and a tiny twinge of hope in the back of the mind ... but ... could Northern actually be working toward being "the Boise State of the Midwest" instead of just required mouthing it like in past years? Because if this pans out, the Huskies might be the UCF of the Midwest, and "getting back to the NY6" may be a lot more than just that's-what-you're-expected-to-say.

Regardless, I like everything I've read, heard and breathed since THammock came in. I still say/hope that April 20 spring game could beat at least the lowest home game attendance Northern has had. And if so, STF & Co. damn well better be out there selling.

Well, let’s not forget about the Oregon State transfer QB who transferred for only a day. Let’s not count our chickens until they hatch...

True but in his case he was still on O st. campus for a semester and his teammates convinced him stay and play WR. He transferred the next year.

Either way, I’m just beyond excited about what this staff is doing. They are identifying needs and holes and going after it hard. Creating competition, and buzz around the program that is just awesome. From a recruiting standpoint, my little NIU recruiting twitter handle was all the program even really had under Carey, now every single coach is ALL IN on Twitter and recruiting daily and it’s AWESOME to see. We’re headed in the right direction folks!

That flip though....... He’s a pass first quarterback but damn athletic! Hope we get him. Hammock retweeted the dad so it must be legit.

I saw this posted on NIU recruiting and I was not sure if this was not just a visit. I see nothing indicating a firm commitment yet. I hope for the best!

It appears he has one year* of eligibility left.

2015 - Redshirted
2016 - Back up/DNP
2017 - Starter at Cal
2018 - Injured in Spring (thumb) prior to season

*Actually, he may be eligible for a sixth year of eligibility due to his 2018 season. So he may have two years left.

This says he has 2 years left. Let’s goooooo!

Well, there you go.

Although, I believe proper protocol demands that an official request for the sixth year of eligibility be made after the five year window has expired/is set to expire. But I could be wrong. Unless there was a rule change, I don't think that it's automatic.

However, his situation appears to be a clear case where a sixth year would almost assuredly be approved.

I would tend to agree, if Bowers comes to NIU, there will be no QB competition. So he played half a game one of his years, does that burn a year of eligibility of does have 2 years left.
