Actually, the subject of this thread was rated .8696/88 coming out of high school (yeah, yeah, I know you probably mean landed coming straight out of high school).

Can anyone imagine landing either of those two just six months ago?...

Six months ago? ......No freakin way.

These guys should recruit for Monty too.

Maybe getting away from read/option and going to more pocket passing is a big part?

Bowers is a very mobile QB. I don't expect him to run the ball 20 times but there will still be designed runs/read options in play book.

Yeah, I think Bowers might run the ball ok onece or twice in the season! lol

We sure don't want Bowers doing that, unless maybe to win a big game! In the season he started for California, he had 60 attempts with -142 yards (of course including sack yards), and 3 TDs, all of which are in his 2017 highlights. I can see a designated QB run to get a TD or to take off if the D is playing man-to-man and gives him a wide open field, but would be surprised to see him running read option plays. He looks to be a pocket passer who can run. However, assuming he is the starter, I would think we would want to protect him from taking a lot of hits, as Childers (presumably the number 1 back-up) has a much different style.

If NIU's QBs were 2 or 3 years younger over the past 5 years, they would have been taken in custody by DCFS. This has been an abusive offense for the QB, and quite frankly one that has endangered the health of the QB. I will be perfectly content to see Bowers sit in pocket all day in this new offense.

Just as long as the O line does its job. That's always the key to any offense. Need to give the QB time and open up some room for the RB. It would certainly help if Bowers can find open receivers so he doesn't have to sit for long in the pocket. We shall find out in a couple months.

Bowers, Childers and Thompson will all be leaving at the same time. So if Valenti isn’t the guy or leaves or whatever, it will be this walk-on Bryce or a redshirt fresh that comes in the ‘20 class. A lot can happen in 2 years and another Bowers could fall in their lap, but if not, they may be feeling the repercussions of the failed qb recruits of the last 2 years.

But for now...Bowers to the MACC!

I suspect the next starting QB after Bowers will be a Coach E guy (selected and groomed) so he's likely not yet been recruited. Hopefully, Bowers and the Offense start out hot and open the eyes of some talented, non-committed, QB recruits. It'd be nice to land a 4-star pocket-passer in the 2020 class.

Looks like he was just recruited.

Okay, 3.5-star (.8538 rating) and not categorized a "pocket passer" but only because he's so athletically gifted, he can throw the rock.

QB Dustin Fletcher, 6'4", Flint, MI

Not that ratings matter, but, Fletcher's rating has been adjusted/increased to .8546 composite.

RE: QB transfer from Cal
I was curious to learn more about the 247 ratings, which are explained here:
https://247sports.com/college/appalachia...ion-81574/

The ratings are:
110 - 101 = Franchise Player.
100 - 98 = Five-star prospect.
97 - 90 = Four-star prospect.
89 - 80 = Three-star prospect.
79 - below = Two-star prospect.

With Fletcher’s rating being increased to .8546, he would be a solid 3.5-star commit, as is Jevyon Ducker the Nebraska RB commit at .8556. By the way, Bowers had a .8696 rating and Childers was unrated coming out of HS, for what it is worth.

Until the commits sign, the only way I see to judge the 2020 commits against prior years is the average for all the commits, which for 2020 stands at .8018 (just within the 3-star rating on average).

https://247sports.com/college/northern-i...l/Commits/

The average rating for 2019 was .8079 and for 2018 it was .8059, so as it stands now both a bit higher than 2020. Before 2018 (back to 2002), the average rating is in the 2-star range.

What does this mean? Of course, we all know that the ratings do not always translate into reality, as we have had higher rated players bust, and plenty of low and non-ranked players become stars. Of course, I still hope we get some hidden gems that have been over looked or that switch positions, but the trend of getting higher rated recruits on average can only be a positive and I hope continues.

The only thing we can sure of, these rating sites do not know a damn thing they are talking about. They are never, ever right.
