3 Open Spots Now in Hoops
Supposedly Bertain is transferring out.
Based upon chatter I believe he must have been nudged to transfer.
Wouldn't be surprised if there is at least 1 more to transfer out.

RE: 3 Open Spots Now in Hoops
Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. He was brought in for some 3pt shooting and never made even the smallest impact. I would suspect Hurtado might be leaving as well, even though his injury history might keep him around per some medical injury hardship capacity.

So we are losing (potentially) 5 guards and a forward. Kinda explains why we are guard-hunting in recruiting...

Happens at every school in every sport. Season ending meeting with the kids, some are urged to move on. Part of the business.* It becomes a problem when too much of your roster are those guys.

Good luck to him.

RE: 3 Open Spots Now in Hoops
My post-season ranking for UAB's large 2018 signing class:

1 Tavin Lovan - Projected starter for 2019. Future all-CUSA

2 Tyreek Scott-Grayson - Projected starter for 2019. Improved considerably on defense as season progressed. Also became more
consistent shooter.

3 Will Butler - Very solid player. ACL tear puts his future at UAB in question. How he approaches rehab a critical component.

4 Jeremiah Bell - A solid player but disappointing output. Averaged 14.7 the previous season at UW-Milwaukee and dropped to roughly half of that at UAB. Hit a few big shots but never really took off.

5 Will Bathurst - From his action late, I think he should have played more.

6 Jude Azabueke - We need him to live up to his rating and the first hand accounts of him at practice. Could shoot up the rankings if he does.

7 Tamell Pearson - A great frame and 6-10. Not shy about drawing a charge. Basketball skills seem to be lacking for this level.

8 Nolan Bertain - Signed as three point shooter and never saw meaningful action. Transferring.

Hopefully Bertain lands in a goid spot, with limited tape. I don't think Davis had this many transfers.

Might as well say four so we bring in six.

Not sure on Davis but in the last three years:

JD Williams
Nick Norton
Deion Lavender
Nate Darling
Thomas Smallwood
Nolan Bertain
Luis Hurtado?

That's half a roster.

Davis' players couldn't make the grades.

RE: 3 Open Spots Now in Hoops
in researching the year Walter Sharpe was on roster, I clicked through from 2004-2005 to present.

we have had a lot of good players over the years but I've noticed their size and skill levels have definitely followed our conference realignments.

https://uabsports.com/roster.aspx?roster=28&path=mbball

imagine that 2004/2005 roster playing in CUSA 3.0.
Squeaky, Eddins, PDIII, Kinnard, Mukubu,etc...

we probably would have gone undefeated in conf play this year.

I generally agree, but I do also think we've had some teams that were comparable talent-wise to that team, but our coaching has consistently gotten worse and worse since Anderson.

IIRC, Davis only had two players here for all 4 years: Aaron Johnson & Cameron Moore.

Bertain was a redshirt sophomore. We got him from the JUCO ranks

That's great, both played in multiple nit's and a ncaa.

Either his evaluation was way off or we just signed him as a practice player. Definitely could have used a good spot shooter with some of our slashing talent.

He was a filler when a higher profile player fell through. Didn't pan out. Good kid.

Remember when this happened. To be honest, I do not believe anyone expected that Darling and Norton would transfer. The coaching staff had to scramble to find players...
