RE: Aresco trying to spin ESPN+ as a good thing
It is a good thing based on description provided. ESPN+ will give exposure to all AAC sports and yet increase the number of games aired on their traditional outlets.

No more cbssn games outside of navy home games. I'm cool with that.

It's not a bad thing at all. Streaming is where everything is headed.

I cut cable last week and went with YouTube TV. I'll pay an extra 5 bucks for ESPN+

RE: Aresco trying to spin ESPN+ as a good thing
Aresco is a disappointment.

He was supposed to know his way around this kind of stuff. First, our whole CONference imploded. Second, he sold them our conference name.

Two years ago he started trying to sell the P6.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/sportstalkf...talks/amp/

Aresco, plans a full court press to complete with a long term marketing plan that will boost the league into the role of a Power 6 Conference. At present in every sport other than football, the AAC is very competitive and often dominates their Power 5 opponents.

It will probably be more than $5 soon. My two biggest issues are:
1. Older fans won't be able to watch a lot of the basketball games unless they have help. My father-in-law has no internet so he's out of luck for a lot of games unless I invite him over. Other older fans might not want to pay for ESPN+ or even know how to get it. That's probably half of our fan base.
2. It decreases our brand. People on TV now might casually watch our game. On ESPN+ they won't have a subscription and will probably have no reason to get one so the Memphis brand gets quite diluted.

I wasn't so it is just an extra fee.

So long as the tigers are good we won't be on ESPN +

This is pretty much the case. Be good and possibly ranked with top players and we will be showcased on primetime and Saturday afternoons ESPN/ESPN+2 except for when Duke, KY or some other marquee team is playing that day. They’ll throw in a few meh and lowly teams because of spreading out the content but this is correct

If our basketball program ends up winning the way that we think it will be winning, then our games will not be on ESPN+. If we are a top 10-15 team our games will be on the traditional ESPN platforms. Basically I would assume the teams in the top half of the conf standings both football and basketball will have their games on TV and bottom half will be streaming

My biggest complaint is that ESPN+ doesn't work with my DVR.

And stop/start functionality doesn't exist on a live event.

Basketball games go from 32 to 65 games on ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU. This is very good.

That's life :) BBall on ESPN linear tv more than doubles. ESPN is also sitting down with CBSSN to see if they are still interested airing bball games...fball will be gone from CBSSN outside of games @ Navy though.

ESPN is giving the AAC $1B because they are wanting subscribers on ESPN+ paying that monthly fee. Their revenue stream from traditional cable is drying up. They aren't going to get that from ECU, Tulane and Tulsa. They will have to put enough Memphis, Cincinnati, Houston and UConn games on there to get people to subscribe. It looks like basketball will have 65 AAC games a year on the ESPN networks. The rest will be on ESPN+. So that means that 127 conference games will be on ESPN+. I expect that Memphis, UConn, Cincy will get a larger share than other teams on the ESPN networks so probably best case is we get 8 games on the ESPN network and 8 on ESPN+. Worst case maybe 6 and 10.
