He's looking to find a couple of starters in the PWO class.
If that’s his thought process we are in trouble.
He probably won't find immediate starters in the PWO class but some of the better players in NIU history started their careers as walk-ons.
If Hammock is expecting a decent amount of transfers after this year, maybe guys who just don't fit his system or even coaching style, he will need extra bodies to replace them. There is only so many athletes the school wants to scholarship. So PWO's make sense just for volume next season.

Immediate? NO. we have had more than a few ALL Mac players that were walk ons; current asst Travis Moore was one of them. Hams is looking for PLAYERS. Looking at the the last few, we is hot after speed. Last 2 guys 11.16 and 10.8 100 meters is moving. Howard from Merriliville looks like he can move as well. Days of fair catching every ball are ending soon.

I hope so. I can understand fair catching kickoffs at the goal line, but at around the 10 yard line I would like to see some speed back there and get great field position or even a few TDs!

Scholarships amounts have nothing to do at the school level, they are controlled by the NCAA. Maximum of 85 allowed, and 25 new/year. If he is expecting a ton of transfers from NIU, I would expect him to look at corresponding transfers in to fill those scholarships that are now freeing up

Part of it may to avoid any further injuries on this team.

I wondered that too. But even Koko was fielding kicks at the 10 last year. They say the strategy is to get that automatic 25 yard starting position by fair catching.

I love the fact that Hammock is giving all of these local kids a chance. Most likely none of them will see the field at NIU but this is setting a great precedent for being able to bring more local kids in! Carey definitely was not focused on that...

RE: 2020 Official Verbal Thread
Dolphin can ball. He's got good size too at 6'3 190.
I'm biased, but hopefully Ham can look at a few kids from my high school. WTHS in Gurnee.
Juan De La Cruz - OLB - 6'2 225. 2020 with the biggest offer from Air Force so far. Plays WR as well and returns kicks. Pretty athletic for a big dude, a good bball player as well but don't think he's DeMarcus Grady good.
Malachi McNeal - ILB - 6'1 215. 2021 dude with no offers. Rangy sideline to sideline playmaker. Reminds me of Pugh.
Christian Phillips - ATH - 5'11 200. 2020 with no offers I could find. Can score anytime he gets the ball in his hands. Unsure what he would play.

Get more athletes to campus increases your odds of finding players. Wasn't Melvin CB Detroit Lions a walk on?

Correct. Melvin came out of Waukegan. Which is a historically awful school for football. Jalen McKie walk on from there too.

He looks like he had good speed, with 4.57 40 Yard Dash and 11.10 100 Meter Dash times. I am always skeptical with times, but he is a track & field guy, so these times look legit.

I didn't see him listed here; my apologies if someone already posted.

RE: 2020 Official Verbal Thread
I included this in the EMU game thoughts thread, but thought this part belonged here
I now like to look behind the ratings of our commits and recruits. For example, I have read that Dustin Fletcher, our dual-threat QB top rated 2020 commit, is not only intelligent (Harvard offer), but he is also a very hard worker, first to practice and last to leave and similar comments. I also saw a comment here about his passing mechanics being the best we have recruited, with which I agree. That is why I am so high on him and would not be surprised to see him starting in his RS FR year, although I always get nervous with FR QBs. I am holding my breath that MSU (where his brother plays) doesn't offer him late. I am also very high on Jevyon Ducker, our 2020 RB/APB # 2 ranked commit, who I have read is considered the best HS RB in Nebraska (and listed as the #16 APB in the country and the #4 Nebraska recruit) and another hard worker. I wouldn't be surprised to see him starting or at least getting a lot of reps in his RS FR year.
Out of our all- time top 30 recruits, there are 7 in the 2020 class. I am hoping these and our other commits have the physical abilities and mental/heart/desire that is critical to these commits being hits and not misses/busts like so many of our other top recruits. If so, we will reap the benefits in 2-3 years!
Here is the 247 list of our top recruits: https://247sports.com/college/northern-i...eRecruits/

The RB was timed in 4.62 for 40 and a VJ 35". That was at a Nike camp so it's legit especially the VJ. Impressive numbers.

I didn't know his times; they are impressive.
He actually is an APB; can run and catch as shown in this video from a game in which he tied the state record for TDs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liOEZc7YQYI
