MaChelle Joseph, winningest WBB HC ever at GT, fired
Quote:Georgia Tech women’s basketball coach MaChelle Joseph was fired Tuesday after being put on leave on February 27 for what was termed a pending personnel matter. Two very different explanations for the firing have emerged.
A news release issued by Joseph’s attorney Lisa Banks said that the coach’s firing was “the culmination of an unlawful campaign of retaliation against her for advocating for gender equity in athletics at Georgia Tech.”Tech sent out its own release reporting Joseph’s dismissal shortly after the statement from Banks, explaining that the dismissal followed an independent investigation that found team members described a toxic atmosphere around the team and that Joseph’s conduct was bullying and also emotionally, mentally and verbally abusive.
The investigation, conducted by Littler Mendelson P.C. Employment and Labor Law Solutions Worldwide, was authorized after team members shared concerns with athletic department administration about player and staff mistreatment by Joseph. The investigation included interviews with every team member, assistant coaches, administrators, support staff and parents of team members.

Glad to see Stansbury acted swifted and impartially to get to the bottom of it. And he wasn't afraid to fire the figurehead of a program that hasn't done anything beyond that HC. This will be an interesting first test of Stansbury's prowess in non-revenue hires. There is no reason GT women's hoops can't compete at a very high (NCAA tournament annually) level.

Gotta love the lawyer statement too. Been claiming discrimination from the start.

In her statement, Joseph said the report's findings that she verbally and emotionally abused her players is false and based on facts and statements taken entirely out of context. A chart broke down each of the specific the allegations. For example, in one instance Joseph said she never called one of her players a "coward" like the report indicated but said on occasion, "We were playing like cowards and scared." Joseph says while she is a tough and demanding coach, she is "not the monster the Report makes me out to be." In the statement she fires back at the school saying, "If Georgia Tech had been interested in actually determining whether I mistreated players or staff, it would have hired an experienced investigator, included me in the process, and allowed me an opportunity to respond to specific allegations and provide relevant information."

Joseph can say what she wants ... an independent third party conducted the entire investigation and didn't side with her in the least.

I have no knowledge of any of the facts here. But it doesn't appear to have been established that the investigation was independent. Was Joseph given a voice or a vote in who GT hired to do this? Was the investigator paid by GT?
I'm not saying the investigators were biased, or reached a wrong conclusion. Merely that it's hard for a consultant to not be aware of which party is paying its fee, and could become a repeat client in the future. That's why we have courts to sort these things out. My guess is this gets settled out of court before that happens.

RE: MaChelle Joseph, winningest WBB HC ever at GT, fired
Former players literally saying out loud MaChelle was sexually inappropriate with them. Can you #MeToo a woman? And I'm not sure what you're going to do about that problem. While admittedly this is based off evidence that is anecdotal, I doubt many will contend with my assertion: This is probably a pervasive problem in WBB from HS to the WNBA. I met probably a half dozen serious WBB fans in my whole life. Every single one of them would be filed in Craigslist under the women seeking women category. It's going to be difficult to control sexual impulses if on every single team there's already sexual tension if not sex happening. Obligatory Candice Wiggins WNBA mention here.
Wonder if the starting meltdown in the WBB program in Chapel Hill is also sexual in nature.

If what GT administration alleges is true, GT should have been losing players right & left, unless they just didn’t care and/or needed the scholarship/partial scholarship.
