I expect Cuse to increase by 5-7K next year. They already have over 4K new season tickets sold. Retention rates are historically high too.

Amazing what a 10 win season does.

Would’ve guessed Northwestern was 14/14 in the B1G. 9th is pretty good for them and actually their ceiling with 47k capacity.

Yeah I was surprised by that as well. I knew Illinois had issues but dang. At least they can point to Kansas.

They need to win. They were in the 50s in 2008 and 2009. They were in the 40s from 2010-2012, but have been on a steady downward trend since.

Washington State only averaged 30,000 with the year they had? They don't deserve Mike Leach.

As has already been noted before, WSU’s Martin Stadium is only 30,000 in capacity. I remember asking a WSU fan about why they haven’t looked at expanding the stadium, and he asked me who WSU was going to put in the new stadium seats, cows??? He told me WSU is in a very remote area and that is why Martin Stadium has such a low capacity. Not likely to change anytime soon.

RE: College Football Attendance Averages for 2018:
By my calculations, the 65 P5 schools have suffered a decline of 4.8% in attendance over. the last 8 years. G5 schools have fared a little worse, declining by 8.6%.

The five biggest losses among the P5 are:

Kansas....25,427
USC........24,458
Illinois.....18,037
Cal..........15,007
UNC........14,628

Combined, these five account for 51% of the total drop in P5 Attendance over that period.

Top 5 G5 losers, accounting for 61% of the total G5 drop:

UConn......17,324
ECU.........16,757
UTEP........15,195
Air Force...12,392
Hawaii......11,629

It would appear that on field suckitude, maybe more than general apathy, has a lot to do with the overall decline. Most of these programs have performed badly compared to their fans' expectations.

RE: College Football Attendance Averages for 2018:
Conferences with the biggest 8 year declines:

CUSA..13.9%
PAC.....10.9
MWC...10.8
AAC.....10.0

Only one conference had a gain in attendance. The MAC had an average increase of 868 fans, or 0.5%.

Others with smaller than average losses were the Belt (1.8%), Big 12 (1.9%) and SEC (2.5%). The Big 12 numbers are more impressive when you consider that they include Kansas. Without the Jayhawks pulling them down, the B12 would have shown a 2.8% increase in their average attendance.

This is an artificial issue to a certain extent. Missouri's average attendance when joining the SEC was in the mid 60,000 range (which was a 10,000 count drag on the conference average). They've declined into the 50's and Vandy's average has dropped from the mid 30's into the upper 20s. However, some incremental declines have been partially covered by A&M's stadium expansion. The Big 10's average was murdered by the additions of Maryland and Rutgers.

Also hidden are the neutral site games which were once home and away series with other top brands. If those games were at home the average attendance for those schools would be up slightly instead of down slightly.

Toss in HDTV and as many of the articles about this phenomenon have pointed out college football viewership is pretty much at an all time high, but expense, travel and convenience have many fans everywhere watching from home. Seldom mentioned however is the fact that virtually every P5 game is televised in some fashion. Having half of them not televised was a motivator for purchasing season books.

So the whole attendance is failing thing loses a little steam when you consider that the popularity of the game is at a high, and when you factor in reduction of fans at home venues due to playing top line opponents at neutral sites which aren't counted in the attendance averages and when you factor in the additions made in realignment circa 2010 reduced the average attendance for the Big 10 and initially the SEC and to a minor extent that of the PAC. At least when the ACC added Louisville it was an attendance plus for them.

I agree concerns about college football attendance are largely overblown. I was a little surprised at some of the numbers, though. Realignment did not affect my analysis, as I was comparing the 2018 attendence for schools in their present conference against their 2010 attendance in whatever conference they were in at the time.

I sort of expected that MAC attendance might have been adversely affected by MACtion telecasts on weeknights. But that doesn't seem to be the case. That might suggest that proliferation of weeknight games have little effect on average attendance. As for the American, all of their decline and then some can be attributed to UConn and ECU going in the tank performance-wise.

In short, predictions of pending calamity for college football in general seem like much ado about nothing. The game is as strong as it's ever been.

It's not only the fact that every one of your own team's games is on TV, it's that if you're at home you can watch 2-5 other games and your own team's game at the same time. Plus the fact that avoiding both the time and expense of travel is a big plus in favor of watching at home. I've seen estimates that 30 percent or more of fans attending college football games live more than an hour away from the stadium -- that's the group of fans with the greatest incentive to watch at home.

RE: College Football Attendance Averages for 2018:
I expect Clemson's average to increase with it being an odd numbered year. In even numbered years we only get one premiere home game: South Carolina. In odd number years we play at South Carolina but it is replaced by the other P5 home game, this season it's Texas A&M. The difference comes from the conference slate swapping picking up home games against both FSU and Georgia Tech giving us two premiere home games compared to none in the years when the rotating Coastal opponent isn't VT or Miami. The even year ACC rotation of NC State, Louisville, Syracuse and whoever from the Coastal isn't very attractive to our fanbase compared to the odd year rotation of BC, FSU, Wake, and GT.

RE: College Football Attendance Averages for 2018:
Temple attendance:

2008: 15,582
2018: 28,470

2nd largest increase over that time behind Mississippi State. TCU is 3rd.

Seldom mentioned however is the fact that virtually every P5 game is televised in some fashion. Having half of them not televised was a motivator for purchasing season books.

And with all those televised games that means more TV timeouts. And if its on the SEC Network, ESPN loves to destroy gave continuity with even more commercials than on ESPN or ABC. At least every non-rev athlete and professor who has gotten any award gets recognized in front of 80,000 fans (of course, they are desperately trying to get cell service at the time).
