It does remind me of that.

If he's like AJ then all his connections will help him recruit. The question is will he be able to develop the players? What will he be like on game day?

Then again, Malcolm Turner should be about as familiar with Stackhouse as anyone. Stackhouse does have experience with the G League which means his focus was on developing players.

Unstated in these types of hires is the PR angle with the local Tip-off clubs. Pearl does a phenomenal job. But prior to Pearl and after Cliff Ellis we had a major drop off of the press the flesh meetings with donors. That was costly. These guys who are coming out of the Pro ranks don't spend any meet & greet time with donors so far as I can tell. They'll speak for 5 or 10 minutes every now and then, send their assistants regularly, and when they do show when they've spoken they cite their busy schedules and skidaddle.

What Pearl has done is not only energize his players, but every donor and tip-off club member feel they know the coach.

Buzz Williams will be another Bruce Pearl at A&M. He will come across to them as down to earth, approachable, and one of them.

Oates knows how to press the flesh, what he'll have to get familiar with at Alabama will be the high school coaches to assist his recruiting, but I'm sure he'll add to his staff to cover that.

I'm not sure with a new president coming in that it was smart of Vanderbilt to hire this guy.

Musselman to Arkansas. Seems decent but don't really know about cultural fit.

Rumor TN coach Barnes to UCLA. I'm guessing it's just a play for more money, but I'm slightly worried.

I think Mussleman is a great hire and actually a better one long term than Sampson would have been.

Hope UT can hold onto Barnes as that’s another sign of growing strength in MBB which is holding onto great coaches and not losing them to other leagues.

I know it’s UCLA but who wants to like in Woodens shadow and the unrealistic expectations?

Unrealistic expectations are TN's forte, though.

If I'm Barnes, I don't want to go to UCLA. He's got a good thing going at Tennessee and the only great thing about UCLA is their history.

$5 million per on the table right now actually a slight pay cut after taxes and cost of living considerations.

Barnes fell into our lap last time around. If we lose him I don't know who keeps it up for us.

Update: free stock and barrel, hard Knox pizzeria, and scrambled Jake's cinammon rolls, plus a raise and likely a raise for his assistants, and he stays.

Kelli Harper is the new women's coach. RockyTopTalk hates that one, but I like it. She could be a Dooley though.

You should have paid the bucks and gotten Mulkey. She's the closest thing to the next Pat Summit.

UCLAs search is being run by idiots it seems. Low balled Calipari and then turned around and did the same thing to Barnes. If they offer 6-7 million that probably gets it done

I actually think it would have to be nearly 7.5 to 9. Based on NerdWallet's cost of living calculator, Barnes $3.75 million from Knoxville would be equal to $6,640,531 in LA. Haven't heard how TN stepped up but if its a raise for him and his assistants, that means around $4 million or more. If it's 4.25 then LA needs a little over $7.5 to match, and more to beat. And you have to beat by enough to make it worthwhile.

UCLA wound up with Cronin at 6 years and $24 million. In Knoxville dollars, thats only 2.2 million. Tells me UCLA probably didn't want to pay $7.5 for Barnes anyway.

Cost of living is an underrated aspect.

But even superficially, UCLA has unreasonable expectations and they don't provide enough support for their basketball program. They seem to think because John Wooden won a bunch of titles that everyone else ought to do the same thing.

UCLA is nothing special anymore. I have no qualms in saying that Tennessee is a better job and their AD probably has a lot more money to spend too.
