DAZN streaming serivce begins MLB highlights but raises price
Quote:Starting next Monday (March 25), DAZN’s pricing structure is changing, as the streaming service that features many of boxing’s biggest stars will go from $9.99 a month with a 30-day free trial to $19.99 a month, or a $99.99 annual option for U.S. subscribers.
DAZN launched in the United States in Sept. 2018, ahead of the Anthony Joshua-Alexander Povetkin fight. The price hike comes as the service is about to add a live look-in MLB show called “ChangeUp,” similar to the NFL RedZone channel that you’ve surely seen or at least heard of if you’re an NFL fan. They also offer Bellator MMA, plus some other sports that I don’t know anything about.

Both DAZN and ESPN+ are using exclusive boxing as a way to drive subscriptions. When compared with paying $75 ppv match, paying $99 a year for 32 fight cards sounds like a great deal.
Now MLB is on DAZN with a highlight show. The question is do they venture into the college market?
In fact they already do with PAC basketball coverage in Canada. Nothing in the US as of yet.

You are grandfathered in for one year at 9.99 if an existing subscriber.
$99 a year is $8.20 a month which is less than a movie channel subscription. Unlike the movie channels where the movies and original programming can be had for free downloaded on third party sites, DAZN content can only be consumed through DAZN.
ESPN+ even I have for free through a streaming service.

No. DAZN needs a big time conference like SEC or Big 10 to get subscribers. They will only find niche subs with MWC or MAC content. They have plenty of niche content. Getting a small piece of the MLB rights is only the start.

If you are used to paying for PPV boxing it's a good deal. Otherwise I dont see the market so far. They are going to have to pony up big money to get any major rights and even then the leagues might be weary

Are you aware DAZN is in other countries and already does business with the leagues? They hold NFL rights in Austria, Germany, Japan, and Canada already. They will bid for any major sports league here in the US, when any portion of the rights come up for bid.

I'm guessing Japanese NFL rights are cheaper and less competitive than US NFL rights.
I could see them getting NFL Sunday Ticket from DirecTV with Goodell talking about how they want that service on streaming

Boxing is a zero sum game. There are only so many champions and quality fights that are worthy of TV.
For the better part of 30 years HBO and Showtime had a monopoly on boxing. You had to be a subscriber and/or order the PPV to watch their fights.
ESPN, FOX and DAZN have signed enough fighters to put HBO out of business. DAZN and ESPN are putting fights over streaming while FOX is has brought them back OTA.
Showtime however is still in the game. At 8 or 9 dollars per subscription they are more competitive for a sports viewer than HBO at 15 dollars.
Ultimately, the only thing worth paying for as you probably know is a high resolution sporting event. Movies and TV shows can be picked up for free quite easily. Pluto is the same TV package as Philo for free.
