The fact the guy won 20 games at PC should speak for itself. That place is hard to win in any sport. It’s a good hire imo.

You guys understand you have to be somewhat respectable in hoops or you’re never getting out of the belt, correct?

UNC-C's last winning season was 2013-2014. Slow down.

Yea,and you had a chance to hire the winnigest coach in the history of our program who was openly pandering for your job. Admittedly, firing Bobby has turned our once proud program into a total dumpster fire for a decade. He probably never would have left app, as he’s from Catawba county.

And you passed on that guy.

Enjoy your next coaching search in 4/5 years.

Yeah, this is a head scratcher. At least we didn't fire him. 03-rotfl
It's not really a head scratcher. When someone takes a putrid program and turns it around it gets AD attention. It's the same reason UNCC hired Healy for FB. Kerns worked for 7 years with Young, had some of Wofford's best recruits and took a school that had never had a D1 winning season to 20 wins in two years. In fact, this is a better hire than Healy is for UNCC.

Better than Lutz? Don't know, but it isn't a bad hire at all.

Exactly.

Lutz is a perfectly good coach. He took over a UNCC program that was already in good shape, and he helped maintain that. I think he would be a great hire somewhere like Georgia State. He’s in his sixties and it’s been a long time since he led a program. Not sure if he’s up for a job like ours.

We need a grinder who can build a program from absolutely nothing to respectability. Kerns has done that. He’s shown he can recruit guys who can contribute right away (believe I read that 4 or 5 freshman were in the rotation for the years team). He runs a modern offense built around a butt load of threes

Not a flashy hire but I think it’s the right one.

Looks like a decent hire, we weren't in the interview room so it's hard to question the AD's mindset and gut feelings. If he can win at PC he can do it at App.

Marshall and UNCC fans disapprove, must be a good hire.

I like the hire, is it the big splash hire some would like - No. I don't believe we are in the position to make the big splash hire. But, I think Kerns is the right fit. We can win with the right hire which has been proven, however, we have also shown that we're not a school that just rolls the ball on the court and wins fall in our lap. It takes the right fit.

Appy has only had 8 winning seasons in the last 20 years and 13 in the last 30. They have also only been to the NCAAs twice 1978-79 under Bobby Cremins and 1999-00 under Buzz Peterson. And the NIT once in 2006-07 under Houston Fancher.

Before the 1972-73 season Appy was NAIA.

Marshal has been to the NCAA 5 times since 1955, one of those being vacated. I'll do the math, that's 1 legitimate NCAA tournament appearance every 16 years. Before last year, they hadn't been in 30 years and that one 30 years ago was the one that was vacated. I just want to make sure you know how great your basketball program is since you came on here uninvited to inform us.

his next post will be ragging on some school put on probation in football.

This is a great hire.

This guy obviously is pretty good at taking a team with no winning culture and not much talent/size, and turning them into a 20-win CIT team in just two years.

I have a feeling he can probably turn App State around fairly quickly because of the talent on the roster.

If he can hang on to our best talent, and our top assistants, than he will be off to a good start, and then we will find out if he was a good hire, but if there is a mass exodus, and we have to start all over again, then I don’t know how he could get the program to respectability in the next 3 or 4 yrs.

There was a Coach Frank Kerns who basketball coached at Spring Hill College in Mobile. He was successful there and was hired at Georgia Southern. Just was wondering if he and Dustin Kerns might be related.

Irrelevant

Only way App leaves involves geographic realignment between sbc and CUSA, or an AAC invite

The latter likely isn’t happening regardless and the former isn’t going to come down to hoops

One more reason that type of thinking is irrelevant; App fans are pretty damn happy with the Sun Belt Conference. The only thing that could make the experience better would be to add Marshall so we could have either GaSo or Marshall at home every year. It's a pipe dream, but it's probably more possible than moving up to the AAC.

RE: App's basketball coaching search
Said all the right things in the press conference and I hear great things about him from some one I put complete trust in. However, imo, he dropped the ball by not retaining Allison. I get it, he wants to bring his staff with him, but that bunch is as green as pea soup and has no connections in the Charlotte area. It appears we are in danger of losing our entire incoming class plus a few current players due to Allison's departure. If so Kerns has created for himself a HUGE rebuilding situation instead of returning a potent squad and one of, if not the best recruiting class in App history.

I saw Allison tonight, still in App gear and interacting with Kerns.

Lutz was never seriously considered. It seems like certain people got hooked into waving his flag for two weeks.

If Lutz were such a tremendous hire he’d be interviewing for other openings instead of going on the radio asking for one specific job at Appalachian.

I don’t blame Lutz. Boone is a magical place. But the Holmes Center isn’t a retirement home. We needed a young, hungry coach to get roundball back on track in the wake of our Cobb-made decade of suckdom.

Lutz was "never seriously considered"? Why did he get two interviews? No one "got hooked" in to anything. Looking at the candidates being named many saw him as a clear leader in terms of experience and connections. Two things App basketball sorely needs right now and he had a lot of support from a lot of people. Clearly the reason he hasn't been hired anywhere is the stigma associated with with the NC State stuff. Gillin' couldn't get past his concern over that perception, even though Lutz has been completely cleared by the NCAA.

I hope Kerns turns out to be a great hire. My concern is he's bringing his entire staff with him and they have almost no D1 experience and not retaining the guy who could single handedly make this a smooth transition instead of a big rebuilding effort.
