More Good Things for Cacok
Are you saying Cacok isn’t a lock to get his jersey retired?

Ehhhhhhh

Rowsom was awesome, and so was Blizzard. No doubt. Neither of those guys ever led the nation in statistical categories though that I recall. Cacok did it THREE times, the only player in NCAA history to do so.

All three of them did great things for the school and team. It’s hard to pick a favorite there.

I also hope Cacok gets a shot at the NBA. I think he has the work ethic and motivation to get it done.

Cacok and Goldsberry are solidly in the NCAA record books.

Agree. I don’t see anyone tying or breaking those anytime soon.

I wonder what the discussion would be had Keatts stayed at UNCW until Cacock graduated and kept all the incoming recruits in place? Great stats on losing teams never looks as good. Players can also be fantastic in college even if it doesn't translate to the NBA. Laettner.

Goldsberry's record (8 for 8 threes in a NCAA tournament game) is probably the easier of the two to be broken. Some guys have already made 8 , or maybe more, but have had several misses in the process. Devontae's will be much tougher to beat.

He will get summer league tryouts. I doubt he sticks. Unfortunately for him he is not the type of center teams desire any more in today's style of game. Look at Deandre Jordan as a clear example. Cacok is pretty close to a traditional center, and there just is not a place for them any more. Now if he developed an outside game, that would change his outlook completely. He has many years ahead of him overseas.

I disagree. With his ability to rebound on the offensive end, he most definitely can find a spot in the NBA. Look at the Warriors/Rockets series for example, the Warriors have dominated the Rockets on the offensive boards which leads to kick outs and wide open threes. Cacok can step out and hit a jumper too, and has been working on his 3 ball. He's one of the hardest working kids that has ever came through the CAA and he will continue to get better and prove the doubters wrong. He has Montrezl Harrell potential, not Deandre Jordan. He will have to prove himself in the G League his first couple of years, but I 100 percent expect to own a Cacok NBA jersey one day.

I like you Dan, be on the right side of history with this take. You bet on kids with his character and will to succeed.

He's also not big enough to be a traditional NBA Center, either. He'd slot in as a PF, meaning he'd absolutely need to develop a jumpshot and/or become a defensive beast like Kenneth Faried.

Faried is one of the tougher one-on-one defenders in the NBA. He won a National Defensive Player of the Year award at Morehead State in 2011 as a precursor for things to come at the next level.

Cacok is a fantastic rebounder, but he had poor defensive coaches all 4 years he was here. So he lags far behind Faried when it comes to lockdown defense. He'd have to bulk up in the weight room and really focus on that end of the court to be anywhere close to what Faried is.

This article seems to differ with you on the defender piece:
013-14 Stats: 10.3 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 54.7 FG%

Kenneth Faried is another young player who has had a solid year so far. His numbers are down in almost every category which is a little concerning for the 24-year-old, but it could just be due to his new coach, Brian Shaw, giving him less minutes.

Faried isn’t much of a defender, but his high energy offensively is something that should not be forgotten. The ability of Faried to come into a game, grab rebounds and score is extremely important for whomever he is playing for.

The forward out of Morehead State is one of the top offensive rebounders in the entire league, too. Averaging 3.0 offensive boards per game puts him at 15th in the league; however, Faried is one of just two players averaging that many while playing under 25 minutes per game.

Faried will continue to improve over his career, making him an important player for this team.

This is a flawed perspective. When asked to defend smaller guys and stretch bigs, yes, Faried gets exposed.

But when played as more of a traditional big, he's excellent, and can guard guys that are bigger than him.

He was used poorly by Mike Malone when he was in Denver. Unfortunately, this is a part of the "positionless basketball" that the game has become, and another reason why Cacok will struggle to make that adjustment at the next level.

at this stage of his career, i see a lot of similarities between the two.

He owns a 1.000 career collegiate 3 pt%.

RE: More Good Things for Cacok
There is a reason I stated he fits as a center with how he plays, because I agree he is too short for PF and would be a liability trying to cover out to the 3 point arc.

Gary,
As a CAA fan, I hope the best for him. However there are an awful lot of players that are really hard workers that deserve success that never sniff it or the opportunity. His size and ability do not appear currently to translate well to the current landscape of the NBA. That is not a knock on him as a player. It is a knock on the garbage that the NBA throws out as a product.

I must agree with Dan on this. Unfortunately Devontae doesn't have the outside game (despite his perfect 3 point avg). 03-wink He can make a very good living playing internationally. We have had young men make a good living outside the nba - Danny Davis, Brian Rowsom, & Brett Blizzard. Sure the NBA would be great but he can do well overseas - others certainly have. No matter where he goes, I wish him the best of luck.

Honestly, I'm in agreement with Dan here. And it's not a knock on Devontae's talent or drive. It's really a result of the direction the NBA has gone. Hell, they're seriously exploring the idea of extending the 3 pt line away from the basket thanks to the recent obsession with deep shooting and analytics/percentages. At this point in his career, I just don't see Cacok fitting into that mold. I would love to be wrong here, as I'm sure we all would. All that being said, with his drive and determination, if anyone is going to prove us wrong it's probably Devontae.

His biggest liabilty is that he can't face the basket and take his man 1v1. And as a back to the basket player, he's only 6'7" and would get stuffed in the NBA. He's also not a long 6'7" guy who can rim protect or stop penetration. I think he will be a monster overseas though.

Agree. That game style fits him a lot better and he's going to be quite successful.

Danny Davis was a beast and one of England's most favorite players.
