RE: D1 hockey bracket released
Congrats to UMD, they were the better team. Must be the game in town as never seen cheerleaders for college hockey teams, counted 10. Did take some pictures and a short video. Here is a link to twitter, cut off after 45 sec so the count down is missing with the players lined up and UMD cheerleaders skating out.

Exciting announcement by Barry Melrose. Illinois to become the 61st NCAA D1 men's hockey team.

Review this heavily edited long post from late April 2017:

I guess that Duluth "club team that went varsity" has done pretty good. They lost the championship game 3 weeks prior to that post and now have won 2 championships since.

The Avs are getting a great one. The guy is pure class:

What club team are they referring to? Am I just missing the joke?

There is no club team, they have been varsity teams for a long time. David has his long ridiculous lists of schools that could go D1. He posted this list 3 weeks after UMD lost the championship game to Denver in 2017. If you haven't seen many of his posts, reading the full post linked might help to put it in context.

RE: D1 hockey bracket released
According to wikipedia, UM Duluth started playing D1 hockey in 1930:

"From 1930 until 1965 UMD played an independent schedule at the NCAA Division I level. The program was accepted into the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) beginning in the 1965–66 season, in which, UMD played until the end of the 2012–13 season. For the 2013–14 season UMD started play in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference."

*UMD became a part of the Univ Minn system in 1947. Prior to that it was Duluth State Teachers College (1927-1947), or Duluth Normal School (1901-21)

I was looking for a highlight clip and saw that someone has posted the UMD vs. UMass championship game on youtube:

Makar is playing in Avs-Flames Game 3 against his hometown team. He scored his first NHL goal with 4 minutes left in the 1st period to give the Avs a 3-0 lead. Avs now lead 5-1 at the 2nd intermission. The series is tied 1-1.

EDIT:

Final: Avs 6-2, lead series 2-1.

And scoring his first NHL game on his first shot in the NHL...in the playoffs.

The Avs are going to enjoy having Makar on the team, and for their sake hopefully for a long time (but for my sake I'm hoping he can somehow end up on the Bruins...).

And just like that, 3 days after this season's Champion was crowned, UN-Omaha released next season's schedule today.
We start again in 6 months on Oct. 11th with UA-Huntsville.
OOC series with Ohio State and Wisconsin (Big10), Ariz State (indy), Maine (Hockey East), Huntsville & Achorage (WCHA).
Then slog our way through the toughest conference top to bottom.
I can't wait! COGS

(Maybe the NCHC is trying to get ahead of the NFL with the early schedule reveal? 03-wink)

I get trying to help Arizona State along until they find a conference, but does UNO really have to play them every year? There are other non-conference teams, like Minnesota State or Northern Michigan that we have a more interesting history with.

I wonder if college hockey has "buy games" yet? Does Ariz State offer an $ incentive to play? Is it because ASU sells more tickets because of name recognition?
I was disappointed at the WCHA opponents- they were teams 8 & 10 in WCHA standings this year. I think fans would love Minn State Mankato which was a trophy game for awhile- (is the real Maverick red or purple this year?). It's always good to have coach Hastings back in Omaha- or maybe bitter sweet because many were hoping he would follow Coach Blais.

I guess because the NCHC schedule is so brutal they are looking for a few easier games. Huntsville (#58) and Anchorage (#60) are the only teams on next year's schedule below UNO (#47) in RPI this year. But there were signs of hope. We got beat on Friday and did well on Saturday. So from now on... don't schedule Friday games !!
