There is an obvious reason for this, and that reason needs to be shown the door as quickly as possible before we sink even further into the sewer. And the budget downers need not respond: The money is there to do it. The powers that be just need someone to agree to pull the trigger. As our friends at Nike say, "Just do it!"
It’s college basketball. This is happening everywhere. If German or James go, it’s going to spell doom for next year. Key and Demograntis though? To be blunt, who cares?

This idea Monty has tanked the program is not based in fact. It’s significantly better now than when he got here.

I would love to have you as my boss. I can go to you after 4 years of mediocre work and then say to you " give me work a 1st yr employee could do" and blow you away and get a great review that says " I hope he stays around a long time". I don't know how a boss could be happy after 8 years of this.

He doesn't have to have "tanked the program" or been "like teh werst evar!!!!1!!1!!!!" for someone to want to move on from him because he's not the best man for the job in moving the program more along.

This crap is ridiculous. It's like you can't look at Montgomery any way other than he's the worst coach in the history of coaches attitude or else you're some pansy ass who is happy with mediocrity and love to lose.

How about just growing up and not acting like an imbecile about it. I really haven't seen one person on this board argue that he's doing a great job and absolutely needs to remain or that a change would not be welcome. Not one person has said that, yet there are a number of posters here who seem to be arguing against this strawman who is in love with Monty.

RE: Jaylen Key leaving....
I hope that Tyler Cochran is the real deal at point guard next year but I won't be holding my breath on that one. Of the 4 "point guards" on the roster this year (Trendon Hankerson, Zaire Mateen, Alize Travis and Caleb Oehlberg), they contributed a TOTAL of 43 assists, 40 turnovers and a 5.5 scoring average. I am truly baffled by the inability to develop even a serviceable point guard.

Apologies. I accidently deleted an earlier post that referred to Cochran, which was ...

According to 247Sports: Signed letters of intent for NIU mbb (11/2018):
--Tyler Cochran, Class of 2019, Bolingbrook HS, 6-3, position: point guard
--Keenon Cole, Class of 2019, Streamwood HS, 6-7, position: power forward

I agree, but "developing" a point guard is almost a speciality in itself. I read some articles written about both players, and some of the things Cochran was quoted as saying seem to be the right attitude ... e.g., when he broke his finger last season and missed half his senior season, made him focus more on others and his job as a team coordinator. He got to see where his role fit in. His comments were coherent and on point. As for Cole, sounded like a real "power" forward, a driver with controlled agression on the court.

So much is attitude coming in, and what happens to that attitude after they're in.

Next year's team will have who it has, but it needs a spark. The on-again, off-again situation with German is not helping. I also really do wish the Star et al would not toss out "others" who are thinking of leaving without either being more specific, addressing the reasons or leaving a line like that out of the story until they actually have something to report. It just fuels speculation.

I have said in almost every thread I don’t have strong feelings about Monty. He could have gotten fired at the end of the year and I would have been fine with it. He’s gonna stay and I’m also fine with it.

But to say he’s the reason “the program is in the sewer” like dogfan did is just wrong. There’s no other way to say it. It is an unarguable fact, by literally every measure you can come up with, that the program is in significantally better shape now than it was when Monty was hired. It can’t be argued. Has he won enough the last few years to deserve to keep his job? That can obviously be argued, but to say he is the reason the program is in the sewer is just a lie.

Thank you lol. I just think there’s a massive difference from “hasn’t won enough recently to keep his job” and “is the reason the program is in the sewer.” Like you said it’s like we can’t just say he’s done some good things for the program while also acknowledging maybe he hasn’t won enough games to continue being the coach.

Significantly better shape now than when he was hired happens to be the same as significantly worse than it should be after seven years.

This program needs to be compared to its current self, not its past self.

The inability to build a stable, MAC contending program should be the barometer. Not Ricardo Patton.

Obviously Montgomery is not responsible for bringing the program to the depths it sunk to, that has happened over a 20 year period. Montgomery though certainly does not appear to be the guy to pull a program out of the dumps. When he states he doesn't even want to be here, wish he didn't take the job, and points blame on his situation to the state of the program and culture, that pretty much disqualifies him from being someone that can change things. You aren't going to evoke change with that kind of victim mentality. For NIU hoops to turn things around, you are going to have bring someone in that wants a culture change and has the character and energy to do it. Tough to find that kind of individual.

You aren't going to evoke change with that kind of victim mentality. For NIU hoops to turn things around, you are going to have bring someone in that wants a culture change and has the character and energy to do it. Tough to find that kind of individual.

Better stated than most and credit to you, MD. It is internal/cultural, as several have noted. But the first thing that needs to be done is to find several hundred thousand dollars to buy out a contract. That's the 600-lb. gorilla in the room. If NIU had that financial option, then all this back-and-forth has more substance. Otherwise, next stop on this train is June 30, 2021.

(Not to drag Patton back in, just for one point: remind me ... did his contract expire or was he bought out? I forget. Memory lapse.)

Anyway, without that, this thread is just like the YouTube video that thxjoenovak posted. Great video, btw. Should be posted every time a thread devolves into he said/he said/she said/whatever and drags on and on and on and ...

The money to buy out Monty’s contract is there. We need to stop blaming the budget and lack of funds. The money is there. They are not pulling the trigger for other reason(s).

I know the NIU academic side of things who are suffering through constant cuts would not appreciate seeing any extra money being wasted to get rid of a coach

RE: Jaylen Key leaving....
I have agreed with MD on Monty article. I wonder why Monty stays if it is so bad for him. I know the money, but to state basically not happy at NIU one would think he would be confident enough to find another job with not much of a pay cut. He has improved the program at NIU. He should be able to interview well. Why doesn't his beloved MSU hire him back? That would be doing all a favor.
