Apparently, the weather was much less inclement a half mile to the south that day. Crazy how that happens.

Good God, some of you guys are delusional, or just don’t think when it comes to this matter. Do we need a quick lesson on turf maintenance, or realize that the stadium wasn’t built for us, but the Barons let us play there for a good chunk of our games, a facility most college teams would kill to play in, yet our baseball program remains mediocre (at the very best), and we don’t draw flies, except for Bama and Auburn.
This is strictly about turf maintenance. Why should they let us play a doubleheader there when the Barons are back in town for their season opener in a week, especially if it’s going to rain?

Instead of sinking $ into Young Field, let's ditch baseball and start the state's first D1 men's lacrosse team. It's a very popular sport in the Bham area.
Dare to be different, UAB.

RE: UAB Baseball
There are a number of college sports UAB could consider adding in the future, but it will keep playing "America's game" -- we just need to do it better. Lacrosse, hockey (ice & field), men's track & field, water polo and swimming & diving are choices that may be in the Blazer future.
UC Irvine (founded at about the same time as UAB) began its athletic program with water polo since the pool was one of its first completed buildings. Today it has a full list of sports in which it has very competitive D1 teams.

Rickwood has the same environmental problems that (unfairly) plague Legion Field when it comes to attendance. It has proven to be a perception problem for both stadiums.
I grew up going to Rickwood when the Barons were a Red Sox farm team. I remember "Glennon's garden", added seats in front of the left field wall, and seeing Norm Zauchin and Mickey Rutner tie for home runs in a season. Game accounts were written by Zip Newman in the NEWS under his byline "From the Roof Top"(the press box was on the roof behind home plate)..

I agree. I went to many Barons games at Rickwood my first two years at UAB (Red Sox farm club, then White Sox farm club) and never had a problem out there. Of course, I grew up in/near Paterson, NJ, so my perception of an inner city was probably a lot different than most folks around the 'ham. I loved the environment at Rickwood, but hated the concrete sterility of Hoover Met.
Of course, a concern would be how much the city would charge UAB to maintain & operate Rickwood for a full collegiate season.

RE: UAB Baseball
Back in the late 80's I believe my parents worked the concession stands at Rickwood to support the local high school band.
Clarkson would come around & was quite personable.
They worked in the ice cream place & also sold beer (which if you know my parents went totally against everything they believed)
It was a pretty great environment though.
Can't recall going to the Hoover Met but just a handful of times. Seemed like it was meant for over the mountain people instead of north of town people.
Been to the new field once or twice.

I don't remember a Boston Red sox affiliation for the Barons. That must have been a really long time ago. I do remember them returning to B'ham in the very early 80s with a Detroit Tigers affiliation when my dad took me to almost every home game up until they moved to hoover in 88 as an affiliate of the White sox. I also know they used to be the B'ham A's before they left the city around 1975ish.

I can't rely on my memory for order, but the B'ham team has been in the farm system of the Red Sox, Yankees, A's, Tigers and White Sox. Charlie Findley grew up a few blocks from Rickwood and while he owned the K.C. and then Oakland A's, blessed it with some really great players (on their way up). Roberto Campaneris, Vida Blue, and maybe Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter come to mind.
One permanent mark Findley made on baseball was introducing colorful uniforms replacing the old white for home team and grey for visitor, both with black lettering. Any time you see a red, blue, green, orange or yellow uniform, you can thank Charlie Findley of B'ham.

Or we could do something crazy like putting the proper amount of money into Young Field and make it look like a legit D1 program. It's there and it's on campus. Maybe, just maybe, more top level players that want to play at a school that takes baseball seriously might give us a look

Young Field seems to have been built as a cheap minimal use field so it probably would take serious money (as in 8 figures) to turn it into what some want today. UAB has several programs that are already in line for funds like those, and they don't have Regions to fall back to.

There is already fundraising for a softball/baseball field house. The hitting pavilion is already there. Getting the stadium itself up to where we need it it actually the easy part. It would require doubling the seating capacity down the lines, adding good concessions and rest room areas and covering the seats behind home plate. We would also need to expand the press box. As far as "programs in line for funds like that" that's not how it works.

RE: UAB Baseball
While we are on the subject of baseball...
It’s frustrating that it seems like the right hand of the UAB athletic department doesn’t know what the left hand is doing. This is alumni weekend for UAB baseball players—41 years worth. Instead of piggybacking on the success and popularity of football, they are going head to head with the spring game.
The cookout is at 1:00 pm, kickoff time for football. Two once-a-year events, and they have to be at the same time? Game time for baseball is 2:00 for baseball, and they will introduce all former players in attendance then. I wish I didn’t have to make a choice, but at this point I am going to be at Legion Field.
They have been consistently poor at connecting with baseball alums, except for an annual letter that Coach Polk sends out that is pretty embarrassing.

The writing is on the wall for baseball. The staff needs replaced unless your only goal for a program is having a bunch of boy scouts on it.
At some point you have to win.
One would think that quality people with quality effort could get quality wins.

Softball might need a refresh as well.
Saw a graphic a while back about conference titles in CUSA 3.0 era. I think we were 2nd to last or tied for last. Ironically, if the three sports that were killed off stayed dead, we would probably own the cellar.

This is Kolaitis' first season and I guess he deserves a pass for a couple of years.
With that said, since Streetman's last season the team has continued to tank.
Playing their game today in the middle of the spring football game is as stupid as it comes.
They even tweeted today that you could use your ticket from the spring game to get into the baseball game today.
