At some point you have to win.

One would think that quality people with quality effort could get quality wins.

Softball might need a refresh as well.

Saw a graphic a while back about conference titles in CUSA 3.0 era. I think we were 2nd to last or tied for last. Ironically, if the three sports that were killed off stayed dead, we would probably own the cellar.

Neither bowling nor rifle competes in CUSA, so they have nothing to do with your calculations.

I believe both of those teams compete in the MEAC conference. How are thy doing there?

Bowling, rifle, beach volleyball and the like are all doing respectable.

Bowling is competing for the championship soon. (even though they made a quick exit at the MEAC championships)

Dropped another one today, losing another conference series to go to 2-10 in CUSA. Not a good time for Blazer baseball.

& the team we lost the series to hadn't won a series in a while.
Is Shoop attempting to do anything or is he just riding it out?

You also have Polk involved in the program.

Once might think that we would have a tad more success.

RE: UAB Baseball
Sunday's rubber match of the series with ODU was not good for Shoop. the Blazers had a 5-0 lead and gave it away with poor defense. A lead-off triple in the bottom of the 9th in a tie game was matched by 2 intentional walks to load the bases with nobody out. and UAB failed to score the winning run. ODU wins the game with a big 11th inning.

Mark Ingram was at the game and was not pleased with the performance.

UAB had some fans in the stands, ODU had a group of a couple dozen that was there all weekend.

I am not as down on Shoop as some are (though I admit he is having a bad year this year) but I am down on the facilities. I disagree with using the excuse that we are sometimes allowed to play a few games at RF unless someone decides to kick us out as a reason to tolerate facilities that aren't up to conference standards. I have talked to multiple sets of parents from opposing teams who have told me that YF is by far the worst park in the conference.

If RF is going to be the Baron's field and not our field too then our AD needs to make upgrading YF one of his top priorities.

Hard to get down on a coach for a program we simply do not support in the stands. Surprised we can even keep a coach.

This message conveys my thoughts exactly and was the reason I started this thread. i do not understand why the Barons and specifically Jonathan Nelson are booting UAB from Regions? There was only one common home date for both teams. UAB is playing a series at Lawson State (how do you get there?) while the Barons are out of town.

I think it’s cool you got to speak with Mark. Exactly what did he say about the performance?

Shoop wasn't born yesterday.

If he needed an upgrade in facilities to compete then he knows where Mark's door is.

This is why the YMF renovation is on the table. Take away Regions and batting cage we have the worst facilities in the country. I’ll be surprised if there isn’t a change in baseball but until we fix other areas of that program we have seen our max. I’ll give Mark credit in that he realizes the facilities deficit. He just has to be guided in certain directions regarding football.

At least third. Other urban campuses have it worse.

Marshall plays their games at the YMCA field 4 miles away from campus or at a minor league park in Charleston, 52 miles away.

Georgetown has their own stadium, but it's 12 miles from campus in Cabin John Park in Rockville, MD.

I'm sure there are plenty of other examples. True, what we've got isn't great, but as an urban campus we could be doing a lot worse.

It could not be worse having to play 90% of the conference games at Young Field.
The UAB baseball facility problem is so ridiculous. The city of Birmingham built a brand new stadium several blocks from the UAB campus. UAB should have no problem scheduling 15 extra games at Regions Park over 2 months and it would not hurt the field at all. It's not like they are playing football and chewing up the field.
Biloxi and Hoover Met stadiums can host 15 games in a conference tournament over 4-5 days with no problem.
UAB does not need to travel 50 miles to find a place to play. They just need some cooperation from the Barons or help from the city to work out a better plan for playing at Regions Field.
Going to games at Young Field in the early 90s was not a bad experience compared to today. You could bring folding chairs and sit down the 3rd base line. Then someone decided to put up a fence and keep everyone out. The 1st base side had grills and a few portable bleachers. The capacity was almost double what is is today.
Bottom line, UAB needs to play at Regions. There might be 4 or 5 games moved to Young Field which would be OK. But UAB can not promote the games at Regions as they might be booted to Young Field within an hour of game time. I'm not exaggerating as it has happened several times with a forecast of 30% rain.
Sorry to beat my point in the ground but the baseball program needs help. And this is the place to start and grow.

This thread had gone on for far too long without a narrow minded complaint about the Barons. Glad to see another one.

If the Barons didn’t want us there, we wouldn’t be there at all. If there’s even a chance of rain, I don’t blame them one bit for moving the game to YMF. The crowd that would be there would be able to fit in YMF anyway. Why shouldn’t they when they have to pay folks to take care of the field, man the concessions, security, electricity costs, etc., and only a couple hundred fans show up?

You want the Barons to help UAB out more? The program needs to start bringing a crowd and winning.

I’m not going to bother discussing the turf issue with you all. It seems that a requirement to post in this thread is believing the fact that turf is an easy thing to manage and that the Barons should cater to our every whim, no matter how it affects the playing field.

RE: UAB Baseball
I do agree about one point with the Barons. They must feel that no one at UAB cares about the baseball program or basically any program other than football. No one shows up at practically any game. It's too cold to go to Regions Park in February and March so why would anyone want to go in April and May either?
There are no promotions for any UAB program other than football and basketball. From that standpoint, the Barons should not help UAB as they just don't care anyway.
It's not all on the UAB fans either. The folks running every program do nothing to make the fans want to go in the first place. Basically no one cares.
The Barons have had poor teams over the last 6 years too. But the Barons draw sell out crowds practically every night. They have a great staff, have great promotions and are extremely fan friendly. UAB and Shoop put up a fence at YMF to run fans off.
I see the point. Why support a program that no one cares about in the first place?
