Niu baskerball and ncaa
Watching Gardner-Webb, Murray State, Yale, new mexico state, uc Irvine, etc and realizing how far off NIU is. It doesn’t even look like the same game.

Was at the tourney last night in SLC and thought the same damn thing. No kidding, walking around talking to people, wearing an NIU shirt. 2 different people commented that NIU was football school, they arent in the tourney. Wow....

In defense of NIU, I think maybe we all lost sight of what exactly an 8-10 conference record means this year. The MAC was an incredibly deep and incredibly good conference , 8th or 9th best in the land. NiUs 8-10 record this year is probably equivalent to an 11-7 season vs a MAC replacement season. NIU was not a great team, but with no doubt in the top half of college basketball. The only problem, this was supposed to be the apex season

I think Jaylen Key is going to graduate over summer and thus becoming eligible to transfer and play

NIU would have held their own if on their game. They beat Buffalo and the Bulls did alright today.

I like his offense and great teammate but I cannot see him moving to a power conference due to his defense. He has not been able to stay on floor in his three years due to fouls. He was also more effective with Marin.

NIU beat Buffalo both years Buffalo cremated a PAC 12 team in the tourney.

Murray St and New Mexico St have been good many, many years. Both programs have incredible tradition and community support.

Add North Dakota State and Liberty (at least) to my list. And Bradley- goes without saying.

I guess I don't get the point of listing a bunch of teams who either won (and in some instances, dominated) their conferences or won their conference tournament and then pointing out how NIU isn't as good as those teams.

Was this up for debate at some point? Was there some confusion?

uhhh, yeah. I thought NIU was / should at least be competitive. I don't expect to compete with the Dukes, or the Michigan States or even the Butlers or Gonzagas. I do expect to compete with every one of the teams I listed. And I just don't see it now. So, if you already knew that and don't see a debate-- that is even sadder!

In a 1 game "playoff", NIU can compete with most of those teams (and win, like they did against Buffalo and like they came close to doing twice against Northern Kentucky). But that doesn't make them better than those teams. Outside of teams like Bradley, who was fairly mediocre (or less than that) for the majority of the season but got hot and beat a weak conference, most of the regular season conference winners were extremely strong throughout the season.

Murray State, UC Irvine, and New Mexico State are simply better (much better) than NIU. And there are a whole host of teams who lost their conference tournament who were much better than NIU. Vermont, Radford, UNC Greensboro, just to name a few.

NIU had a good season. And, as MD pointed out, they were better than their record indicated. But they were still no where close to these elite mid-majors and I think it was pretty obvious the entire season. I mean, if you think this needs to be debated....okay. I just don't see it as anything but obvious.

I don’t expect NIU to beat schools like Murray St or New Mexico St. Look at the histories of those programs. Look at the fan bases. Going to a game at NIU is night and day compared to Murray St or New Mexico St. Those 2 schools have had a million coaches and never stop succeeding for a reason. They’re like NIU football. Doesn’t matter who you plug in.

Agreed. As far as the programs, I agree. As far as the team itself, I also agree the they are better.

I just thought we were closer to being competitive on the court, and I just don;t see it. And that is more than a little sad. Ricardo Patton dug such a deep hole that getting back to even is still almost nowhere in sight! I think there is progress, but it is slow-- and there is a long way to go. Is there a way to make it happen faster?

I guess I'm just not understanding the vocabulary you are using because, I find myself agreeing with you, then you say something and I can't figure out your angle on it.

For example, what do you mean by "compete"? We're watching teams in the postseason in elimination games. Almost anything can happen. The odds favor a certain way, but things (upsets) happen. Just because UC Irvine beat Kansas State yesterday doesn't mean that UC Irvine is demonstratably better than NIU. Do I believe that NIU could "compete" with the Anteaters if they were in the same conference? No. Not this year. Do I think NIU could beat them in one game? Absolutely.

The other thing I don't get is this comment.

"Ricardo Patton dug such a deep hole that getting back to even is still almost nowhere in sight!"

What exactly are your expectations if you think "even" is "nowhere in sight!"

Are you saying "even" equals competing with Buffalo for the league title? If so, how is that "getting back to even" if they were never at that level, at any point in the program's history, ever.

I see "even" as half way. Which is exactly where the program is right now. Is that good enough? Eh... I don't know. Would I want more out of a coach over 8 years. Yes. But are they basically where they should be? Probably. Although, I'd say with a team like they had this year (with the seniors and experience and German) they underperformed. So, that's a negative on the coach.

Nevertheless, I still don't understand how the team is in a situation of "getting back to even is nowhere in sight".

But I'm probably not understanding your intention.

At some point we have to stop bringing up Ricardo Patton. Montgomery came off his best coaching year. He’s trending in the right direction. Guys wanting to leave and transfer programs is as big of an issue to college basketball as one and dones. Everyone loses people. Duke, Kentucky, UNC will have to replace there entire starting lineup next season. Mid majors get hit with the transfers. Same problem at a different level. Nader was our biggest loss since he moved on to the NBA, but it’s part of the game now. Maybe we can replace these guys with hungry juco guys.

Yeah there is no debate. Rarely is NIU a .500 team with only 3 or 4 winning seasons since 2000.

According to tweets Key is gone...German liked the tweet so am I making too much out of the like thinking that German may also leave? I doubt that he would leave but who knows...
