RE: 2019 Basketball
updating from previous post

how the roster currently looks/appears to be for next season with classifications for 2019-20 season. With 10 returning and 6 signed/committed for 2019 there's going to be some departure(s) from the returning players or signees. Since Clark and Weatherspoon are both walk-ons I could see one or both of them not coming back along with one of the regulars from this past season. However, possibly one of the JuCo's who is still a freshman returns to his JuCo for another season.

Harper-Baker: 6-5 Sr Forward
Rowe: 6-11 Sr Forward
Draine: 6-4 Jr Guard
Watson: 6-2 Soph Forward
Jacdonmi: 6-9 Sr Forward (played sparingly)
Clark: 6-0 Sr Guard (rarely played)
Weatherspoon: 6-2 Jr Guard (redshirted)
Marshall: 6-5 Soph Forward (played sparingly)
Stevenson: 6-7 Soph Forward (played sparingly)
Daniel: 6-5 Soph Forward (played sparingly)

Signees/Commitments
Denijay Harris: 6-7 Soph G/F (currently listed as FR on his JuCo website)
Jay Malone: 6-1 Soph (listed as R-Fr on his JuCo website)
Jorell Saterfield: 6-4 Fr G/F (avg 28 pts and 8 rebounds HS Sr season that just finished)
Isaiah Jones: 6-8 Jr Forward
Hunter Dean: 6-9 Fr Forward
Jeff Armstrong: 6-2 Fr Guard

I have heard from two reliable sources that Tim Rowe will not be back next year. Have heard that he is simply not interested in playing anymore.

RE: 2019 Basketball
good article on one of our incoming players:

https://www.meridianstar.com/sports/pick...2ad14.html

Malone’s spent the last two seasons at Southwest Mississippi Community College, and in the fall, he’ll sport a new uniform when he takes the court for the University of Southern Mississippi.

Malone, a point guard, signed with Southern Miss last November.

Malone redshirted his first year at Southwest Mississippi but started in 17 contests during his redshirt freshman season. He scored a team-high 14.3 points per game and averaged another team-high 29.4 minutes per contest. He scored more than 20 points per game on three occasions, and posted a season-high 25 points against Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

Exactly two months ago, Doc Sadler stepped down as the head men's basketball coach at Southern Miss. Tuesday, the program picked up one of the top players from Alabama.

After a stellar senior year at Westminster Christian, Auston Leslie signed on the dotted with the Golden Eagles.

The Class 3A Player of the Year averaged 19 points and 9 rebounds this year, leading his team to a spot in the state title game. And, Auston said that when the offers started flooding in.

Tuesday, he chose to take his talents to Hattiesburg because that's where he felt really at home.

It should be a building year next year. You never know the team could gel early. We will see.

RE: 2019 Basketball
basketball hired it's 3 assistant. not much jumps out about him in the last 10 years but considering how little we probably pay it isn't like we were going to get a current P5 type assistant:

https://southernmiss.com/news/2019/6/27/...-hill.aspx

Southern Miss head men's basketball coach Jay Ladner has announced heralded recruiter Dalonte Hill as the third assistant on his inaugural staff, joining Kyle Roane and Clarence Weatherspoon.

Hill served the previous two seasons at Austin Peay, where the Governors won 41 games over that span. He was also a key component in successful tenures at Charlotte (2003-05), Kansas State (2006-11) and Maryland (2011-13).

Hill's playing career began at Charlotte (1997-00) before spending his final season at Bowie State. While with the 49ers, he played twice in Reed Green Coliseum when Roane was a Golden Eagle assistant coach. After a brief stint in the AAU circuit, Hill rejoined head coach Bobby Lutz from 2003-05 and helped guide Charlotte to a 61-30 mark and three consecutive postseason appearances, which included back-to-back NCAA Tournament trips. Hill coached two All-Americans and a Conference USA Player of the Year while at his alma mater.

Hill's next stop would be at Kansas State (2006-11) under Bob Huggins and Frank Martin. The Wildcats won 20 games in four of the five seasons. Hill helped land a pair of national top-10 recruits in Michael Beasley and Bill Walker in 2006, earning the nation's top-rated signing class by Scout.com and Rivals.com. During his time at Kansas State, Hill brought four McDonald's All-Americans to Manhattan.

He worked his magic back home at Maryland as well (2011-13), pulling in local standouts such as Melo Trimble to help Mark Turgeon bring the Terrapins back to prominence. The Terrapins boasted top-25 recruiting classes each of those two seasons. He returned to the AAU ranks before joining Austin Peay in 2017.

He was once the highest paid assistant in the country, but got in trouble for two DUIs. Could be an excellent pickup. COULD.

just saw patrick Magee's article:

https://www.sunherald.com/sports/college...19037.html

The same Southern Miss basketball program that gave Larry Eustachy a second chance in his head coaching career will now serve as the host of another reclamation project, this one for a man who once ranked among the nation’s top assistant coaches.

USM has hired Austin Peay staff member Dalonte Hill, who was once the highest paid assistant in college basketball during his stint at Kansas State from 2006-11. With his salary topping out at $423,750, he built a reputation at KSU as one of the nation’s top recruiters.

He moved to Maryland in 2011 and again attracted star recruits like guard Melo Trimble, but a string of DUI arrests put a halt to his climb in the coaching profession.

His first arrest in January 2012 resulted in probation and a two-game suspension from the Maryland staff. His second led to his forced resignation in November 2013.

While in search of another full-time coaching job, Hill finally hit rock bottom when he was arrested a third time on Nov. 12, 2015, and eventually sentenced to 60 days in jail.

Once he left Howard County jail in Maryland, Hill told the Washington Post in March of 2016 that he had quit drinking and had begun to spend more time with his family.

“I told Coach Ladner when I got here that it was a blessing,” Hill said. “I ended my basketball career here with a torn meniscus. It’s amazing.”

Correct. It was never proven that Briles did anything wrong. Hill was arrested 3 times.

We have the text messages. He wasn't convicted in a court of law, but many people do such horrible things you would never want to be around them, but aren't put in jail.

Our opening game in the Bahamas is against Gonzaga. Round 2 should be either Seton Hall or Oregon.

RE: 2019 Basketball
Marshall released their CUSA portion of the schedule and we go there on Feb 6 which means we play at WKU on Feb 8.

Also saw on the main CUSA board where "Va Eagle" posted we were getting $2 million for being in the Bahamas tournament.

RE: 2019 Basketball
I'd like to see paperwork on that $2 million. That'd be a crazy amount of money for one tournament. I like it if it's true, but not so sure it's the case. We'll see though. I believe basketball is a sport we can be very successful in if we'd invest in the program. It's time we move some dirt and get things upgraded in Reed Green.
