He followed it up with an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament. Then he had family die and took the off-season off from a recruiting standpoint.

Looking back on it, firing a coach one year after an NCAA bid is one of the more radical moves UAB has made in athletics. It's been a while so I'm fuzzy on the details. Did UAB have to buy out any years on Davis' contract? If so, I wonder who paid for it, boosters or the school?

He took every offseason off recruiting, that was one of the biggest knocks on him.

That being said I would have loved to see him coach the players Haase recruited.

Food for thought(not being an advocate for either solution)

Mitch Gilfillan @mitchgilfillan

Wofford’s Mike Young went 74-103 without a winning season in his first 6 years. Since then, he has been to the NCAA tournament 5 times in 10 years. Sustaining a winning foundation takes time, patience, and losing seasons. Most coaches/staffs do not have that luxury.

Would be interesting to look up & see how many conference tournaments & auto bids Wofford won.

RE: Coaching search
I don't think anyone is going to argue that most coaches get better as the years go on. Wes Miller is another good current example. Miller was at 60-92 in his first 5 years at UNCG before going on his current run. Kermit Davis went 149-126 before MSTU went on its run.

The difference is that Wofford didn't start D1 until 1998, and didn't go to any postseason until 2010. UNCG started in 1980 and only has 6 NCAA/NIT bids in its history. I'm not sure when MTSU began playing D1, but it's at least been since the 70s, and they've only had 13 NCAA/NIT bids. UAB just concluded its 40th season, and has gone to the NCAA or NIT 27 times in that span. UAB has history that isn't in the same time zone as those programs, and in no way should it be looked at as a school where a coach should simply cut their teeth.

The other side of that coin is to look at how rare it is for those coaches to show the same level of loyalty. Kermit was mediocre for 70% of his time at MTSU and left. I'd hope that Ehsan stays at UAB if he has success, but that's pretty rare these days.

Davis was let go with one year left on his contract. He agreed to a reduced buyout amount for that last year instead of being fired for cause. He was on Dr. Garrison's **** list after the Ed Berrios situation, and he was a dead man walking at UAB when the Demarcus Cousin thing happened the next year. If memory serves the Cousin's thing happened the year after he got his one and only contract extension over Dr. Garrison's objection and she told him then he would never get another contract extension at UAB nor would she pay him to go away. Dr. G didn't play, and seeing Davis gone was among her last acts at UAB before the BoT forced her out.

"Destination" school programs, like "destination tourist cities" are very few and far between. UNC hired its BB coach from Kansas, certainly a name program too. Where will Duke be looking in the near future? Right now Bruce Pearl is making Auburn look like his destination program. It is virtually certain that nearly all G5 programs are "stepping stone" programs for coaches in all sports. To borrow the rodeo saying,"You ride until you are thrown off",or in business where it is said "Be nice to those you pass as you go up since you may see them again when you go down". .

To be specific, The Berrios thing was Davis threatening to have a professor fired if he didn’t let Berrios retake the final exam he had flunked him on.

Too bad Davis didn’t have that type of pull.

As Dr. Garrison explained to him quite explicitly.

RE: Coaching search
Davis, Haase, and Ehsan have all contributed to our slide in men's basketball, in their own ways.

A couple of Davis teams came very close to breaking through. He had some good regular seasons but the team always seemed to fade late. Plus the long list of off the court issues. The Neal Callaway and Mike Davis years at UAB roughly coincided. The "Bama Years" on the Southside didn't work out and both programs were left considerably weaker than the two Bammer coaches found them.

Haase came in and became our first coach not to get to the NCAA or NIT by his second season. He made a great run at the end of a third mediocre regular season but then failed to follow through the next year (CUSA reg champs but no big wins OOC and no NCAA bid). He left before really establishing a solid foundation.

Ehsan's story is unfinished. So far it's been somewhat of a tragedy but he still has a season to become the hero. If it were a movie, this would be time for the montage of Ehsan (played by Kevin Bacon-of course) scouring the planet for those last critical players.
