RE: Coaching search
Contract extensions are good for recruiting purposes but mean little if the money and desire are there to finance a change. Mike Shula got both a raise and an extension just before he was fired when Bama then hired Nick Saban. The same would apply at UAB BB.

Original contract was through April 2021. Ingram snuck in a one year extension on top of it over last summer. So, now he’s here through April 2022. $400k buyout.

Ingram is here through 2023, thats due to an extension somebody gave to him too.
Norton was extended deservedly so, through 2023.

We had a $50k start on Ehsan’s buyout, but we spent it on the CBI. 03-lmfao

It really is laughable.

Avery’s buyout is $8mil, so I wonder how they work that out.

We can’t come up with a measly $400k for a buyout when at least Kennedy is living in our backyard?

Not saying he’s the answer, but he couldn’t be much worse than what’s in place.

Where is the money to make a change going to come from? The way I see it, unless a deep pocket booster/boosters on the MBB side pony up some big money, we're going to continue with Ehsan and can't afford AK.

Expecting Watts to spend big money on UAB Athletics without a gun to his head is completely out of touch with reality.

Isn't that how it works at most schools? That's how we built the football facility and gave raises to Coach Clark and his staff after this season. It's for that reason that I haven't expected UAB to make a change with basketball, not that a change isn't needed. A basketball hire in the same school year as big raises for the football staff may just be too big a bite for the school and boosters. Now next year...

At some point, unless Watts unexpectedly leaves, the Athletics Foundation will have to step up for men's basketball or we will stay mired in mediocrity.

BUT...
People complain about not being impressed by the men beating bad teams (which I get). However, if you really look at it, the women have piled up wins against bad teams. I was surprised when I took a close look at the women’s schedule...really, not very impressive when you look at how the ladies performed against teams with a winning record.

So, why the different standards?

Women’s basketball much like football hasn’t seen much of any success, not that I can remember. Therefore folks will show leniency to not making the dance. Also, no matter the success, the common sports fan don’t care much about women’s athletics. That’s whether the ladies host Miles or Auburn.

Men’s basketball is supposed to be known as our top sport and it’s done nothing but regress. It’s held to a standard of postseason or bust, because that’s what it used to be known for doing. Norton’s teams have gotten better each year. He still has an opportunity tomorrow to surpass last year with a win.

The talent and physicality in women’s basketball has a wider margin from top to bottom as well, my opinion. Played those manly women of Georgia tech last season and you could see the huge difference.

Norton will eventually have to start playing some more quality teams, beating them if he wants to get into the NCAA tournament and there’s going to come a time over the next 2-3 seasons where he’s judge on that. I imagine he’s hired away before folks get really concerned about not making the NCAA tournament.

He got a regular season title last season and they finished 2nd this season. Back to back seasons in the WNIT. There’s not much to complain about in regards to the standards that I’ve always thought we’ve held the women’s program, too. As or if the women continue to this run, the standards will rise.

However, with men’s basketball, it seems we’ve trashed all those standards and decided to wallow in self pity because we’ve been left behind in conference realignment twice.

What’s the saying? That’s comparing apples to oranges.

Nobody necessarily wants Kennedy. They’d like for our AD to see what he could bring to the table. Right now while he’s unemployed, because he’s not gonna be unemployed much longer. He’s gonna be hired somewhere and he’s going to do well, whether anybody likes it or believes it.

For those that don’t see our program going in right direction, we’d hate for him to be dancing in the ncaa tournament 2 years from now at another school and us still finishing a game or 2 above .500 in cusa play with the same coach based on what we’ve seen. They’re tired of saying “what if” in regards to Andy Kennedy. Nows the perfect time to interview the man, with a small buyout for the current coach.

I don’t agree entirely that he’s the guy. His name is going to be considered because blazer fans have become lost in what’s going on in the college basketball world and with what coaches are the ones that are realistic targets for us. When you become uninterested in your own team, you don’t know what else is out there anymore. They just know AK is fairly young and he overachieved at Ole Miss by what I personally think is possible over there before they built the new arena. I don’t like some of the off court baggage that AK has nor some of the comments when he threw his players under the bus.

There is a similar issue at play. Both MBB and WBB of CUSA are considered one-bid entities. So, there is no real reason to schedule tough outside of conference since the tournament champion is the lone NCAA Tournament representative anyway. Until that perception changes, whether due to improved OOC preseason or non-NCAA postseason success, ...

I like AK but don’t forget he will push the envelope and take chances on some questions character players. We have a coach and all this is a moot point any way. Best thing we can do is support the program and show up and actually do something this team has not had in three years. A home court advantage. That’s on us. We have not done our part as fans.

Ehsan needs to do his part and give the fans some hope by signing a strong late class. He signed Lovan in March last year. We need at least 3 players of his talent level.
