At the $$ level of a head basketball coach, I can easily imagine final approval having to come from all levels.

I did find a listing of interest posted just 3 weeks ago for Senior Associate Athletic Director for Advancement....."is the lead fundraiser for Tribe Athletics, responsible for the leadership & strategy for private philanthropy for Tribe Athletics."

Sorry if I'm being obtuse but isn't that Bobby Dwyer's job? Maybe not in name but...

This Daily Dirt is four days old but connects JT3 with WM

“I mentioned JTIII at William & Mary last week - his name has really heated up there over the past few days.”

Dee is a great guy! Got to interact with him a good bit during his and Shaver’s first 2 years coaching at W&M. Best of luck to him and his family.

That’s quite the Shaver legacy at HS if Austin gets the job; Tony as an incredibly successful coach, then Vick whom played for Tony and coached with him, and then Austin potentially ...

Not sure how we would ever get the $$ to get JT3 but at this point wouldn’t mind him at all especially with the connections and clout he brings. Have to imagine he could pitch to Chase, Justin, and Nate about how he could help make them into legit NBA prospects/players and that would be attractive to them.

How is/was JT3 as a recruiter?

That is hard to say. He definitly brought in talent, but was it because it was Georgetown? He had successful years at Princeton as an assistant and head coach, so he would have to have some recruiting ability. My only experience with JTIII is he was my summer league coach back when he was a Princeton assistant. I'm sure a lot has changed since then, but my impression was that he was fair and seemed like a good guy.
The John Thompson name isn't so far removed that it doesn't hold currency. His time at Gtown combined with his team USA time has probably built up a nice network of assistant candidates. And, as we know, your assistants are your main feet on the ground for recruiting. I still think he would be the best possible hire we could hope for.
I had listed the various coincidences in another post about JTIII and W&M. But, unless there are some behind the scenes machinations that I'm unaware of, I find it difficult to see how he finds his way here.

I'd be very happy with JT3. I'd have to imagine he'd be a coach that could convince the transfers to stay - Final 4 appearance with Georgetown, Coach for USA Basketball, good name recognition.

As I said in another thread, JT3 would be a great get for us. I do think he would have a chance to keep the team together. And I like the larger investment in the basketball program, if his is indeed true.

As I also said, I would've liked to see Shaver get to operate with increased resources.

But, if this is a "bump" in the road to new elevated support from the administration, then it will be worth it.

Agreed.

If we hire JT3 it could also be tied to a new or upgraded arena and the decision to change the face of MBB.

I’m convinced that the new money is coming from the college and not from donors. Rowe can allocate money in the overall budget to the athletic department. If that’s the case then cuts are being made elsewhere. The numbers we are talking about equate to 5-10% increase in the AD budget.

RE: Reset Page - MBB
Well, so far we’re talking about a roughly doubled coach’s salary, and presumably increases for assistants and various other niceties. Doable, I suppose, with more giving and cuts elsewhere.

But if we say it’s tied to a new arena, that’s pretty easily $60 million plus. (D.C.’s new 4,200-seater, future home of the tournament, was reportedly at $69 million in the fall, and I suspect even more including all costs). The Kap could be upgraded, yes - guessing $15-20 million up for a major redo. (For that money I’d buy the practice facility first).

So, who has a whole, whole lot of disposable dough, who simultaneously really wants to support Tribe basketball but has really low regard for Tony?

Your numbers seem right or in the ball park. No nickel and dime cuts will get that kind of money. More fans won’t move the needle either. Need major money from donations. Remember, that’s Huge’s specialty. Still waiting to see what she’s able to pull off. Haven’t heard anything yet and we are nearly two years in. Seems like we may be dealing with a non-wizard behind the curtain. What positive things has she really done outside of the Stanford game?

Surprised that Mike Young's salary is as low as reported (<$200,000.) Doesn't appear money or P5 limelight is a priority. Despite being a Radford native, many reasons for him being entrenched in Spartanburg. He was one of two finalists for Charleston back in 2014 before withdrawing.

Interesting read about him driving to Winchester last year to convince his center to stay and not transfer as a grad student. Also, interesting because of the skillset he values in the post which is Nate personified. Not going to happen, but would get my vote going forward. He obviously understands the value of being genuinely wanted and appreciated.
