Quote:Herd, Virginia Tech close to deal

By ANTHONY HANSHEW - The Herald-Dispatch

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall appears close to continuing its non-conference football series with Virginia Tech.

According to Marshall athletic director Bob Marcum, a three-game series between the Thundering Herd and Hokies is being discussed. The middle game of the proposed series would be played in Huntington.

"We’re in the process of working on a three-game series with Virginia Tech and everything is proceeding well," Marcum said.

Marshall and Virginia Tech met in Blacksburg in 2002, a 47-21 Hokies victory. The second game of that two-game contract will be played Sept. 17, 2005, also in Blacksburg.

Both Marcum and Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver are adjusting schedules in the wake of conference realignment. Virginia Tech joins the Atlantic Coast Conference this fall from the Big East, while Marshall will leave the Mid-American Conference for Conference USA in 2005.

Virginia Tech would be the latest BCS conference school to commit to a game in Huntington. Marshall has home and away contracts signed with Miami (Fla.), Tennessee and Kansas State.

I hope ya'll get the deal signed. We just finished a 2-1 with VT. Their trip to O-Town in 2000 still marks as our highest attended game at just over 50k. Good luck!

Don't be surprised if VT "delays" the game in Huntington on short notice, especially if you guys look like you will give them a run for their money.

Maybe that's just the LSU fan in me talking though...
