Plus you add this on top of the recent article saying he regretted coming to NIU, its time to move on. So sick of this. He is the modern day Al Bundy from Married With Children. Put on your big boy pants and start living in the now. Try to give back to the school giving you hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to advance THEIR program.

Seems reasonable to me.

In other words, I agree!

I don't think, in a vacuum, this is a big deal, but:

Given his mediocre performance as a coach, and his recent semi-disloyal statements in the press, would be less harsh if he went to the Pig10 tourney in street clothes, or wearing an MSU hoodie but NIU hat. The 2019 Chevy Tahoe with aftermarket rims he pulled up to the game in was funded by NIU, show a little Huskie love if you're in the vicinity of TV cameras...

RE: Monty the Spartan
I, for one, did not like the light the article put Monty in. I thought it was in real bad taste for him to say those things and his comments were indefensible.

With that said, this whole thing with him at the Spartan game and wearing green, I literally couldn't care less. It's his alma mater, he played for the Spartans, they're playing down the road from where he lives, and he was an assistant there for a long time (this one ranks lowest of everything I just listed imo).

I'm sure if they were playing in Madison Square Garden (like they did last year), he wouldn't have been there. But it was down the road in Chicago. Which made it really convenient.

NIU filmmaker, you are wrong! Monty’s cars, house you name it are funded by MSU. He made more money there than from NIU. He hasn’t even come close to spending NIU money.

Where is the article and was there a thread on here referring to it?

Totally fake news. That’s not what the article said and your negativity is unbearable. I know people claim that you are passionate about NIU but your hatred is divisive and poisonous. You were happy for about two days and now this again. A true fan would not go out of their way to spread false information. Fine you didn’t like his attire or quote. Who cares. Move on.

I do not have any hatred, just frustration. Read that article again, he basically said he regrets coming to NIU and that he had a better job at MSU. When you are trying to build a new culture, what is poisonous is blaming the system and claiming its not your fault because you are in an impossible situation. That is not what an effective leader does. I just think its a bad look for him to be MSU fan crazed while being a coach at NIU, especially with the culture issues at NIU. It doesn't help.

RE: Monty the Spartan
Put me in the camp that thinks wearing all MSU gear and nothing from NIU (I assume) at a major public event while being the head coach of a major program at NIU is "UNPROFESSIONAL". MM is one of the two biggest public figures (along with Hammock) of NIU sports.

NIU pays your bills and pays you extremely well. What message is being sent to your players???

What about a recruit you are going after that you meet at the game? Just where is your head and heart?? What about the TV possibly showing you and saying "There is the head coach of the NIU Huskies in attendance".....or possibly being interviewed by a sideline reporter?? How do you give NIU positive exposure while wearing all your Spartan green on national TV ??

If it were me, I am wearing NIU gear , but of course sitting with the Spartan fans rooting on the Spartans...Nothing wrong with that, imo.

He should of at least wore an NIU hat or shirt, possibly mixed in with any green gear you like to wear. Something to show that he currently is affiliated and represents NIU as the major representative of NIU basketball.

Go ahead and call me "old school", but this is called "professionalism". I graduated from a Big 10 School as well , and NIU has played several times at this school on the road in basketball and football, and I have worn ALL NIU gear while in attendance, because NIU pays my bills.......

It does not surprise me that his record is 150 losses vs 105 wins at this point in time and highest MAC west finish is a tie for 3rd after 8 years.......

+1
The point is, he can go to an MSU game. He can root for them. he can wear their apparel--- as an accompaniment to his NIU apparel. But in public, you represent NIU -- especially at a basketball tournament. Bad faux paux by him, but, it shows where his head is at-- and that's not good.

BTW, I heard radio post game comments on our last two games-- and Monty was not impressive. The opposite. He lost me. After the 23 point come back in the second half against Toledo that fell short, he pointed out a player that was scoreless in the first half, and pointed out a couple of mistakes in the second half - I don't remember if it was turnover, or missed free throws-- "some mistake."
The point is-- that was his focus. That's what he said about the game. Not, "heck of a come back-- the kids played great -- they played hard-- -shows the future is bright-- my hat's off to them--- I am soooo excited to get back at it. We are soooo close...." NOPE that was not what he said, nor was it the tone of what he said. It truly reminded me of Charlie Sadler. And that is NOT a compliment.

The assistant that did the post game after the next to last game on the other hand---- he seems ready for the job.

Is it wrong? No. Is it dumb? Yes. In fact it is Rod Carey dumb. You can’t tell me half of this board would not be crucifying Carey if he showed up at a Hoosier game in IU gear after and an NIU bowl loss.

Fixed it for you.

Adding the word "loss" after a Carey bowl appearance is redundant, because, winless.

Carry on.

Because not many care about basketball, Rabid is right. If it was our football coach going to an IU gane or Gopher game in full gear after NIu loss, people would care.

RE: Monty the Spartan
When Monty was hired and introduced as our Head Coach I was impressed and excited for the future of the program. However after a long run it is clear that he has not been successful and is unlikely to have success in the future . It is past time that NIU thanked him for his service and moved on to give someone else an opportunity.

I have zero problem with his attending an MSU game wearing MSU attire. He has close ties to the school and they have been an important part of his professional life. I do not agree that it reflects unfavorably on NIU.

I wasn't. But I'm sure I was in the minority at that time. I'm not one bit surprised how Monty's tenure has played out (I'm sure I'm in the minority there as well).

I'm very curious to know what camp everyone was in at the time of his hire.

Be honest, everybody.

RE: Monty the Spartan
I was totally against him (MM) at the time of the hire, and also against Rob Judson. I knew NIU fans would fawn over him, because he is sitting next to Izzo and going to Final 4's year after year, and it looks on paper as a "great hire"....and a fantastic recruiter....

You do not hire assistants at Big 10 schools , thinking they are the next Tom Izzo, or Bill Self (Rob Judson). They are assistants and have never called a time out in their life, never held a practice as a head coach, and have never won a game as a head coach. Never been in charge of a team as the head person and have not made key decisions as a a head coach. How hard is it to recruit a kid to play at a Big 10 school as an assistant coach??? The answer: not very hard. So the "big recruiter" of these assistants is a myth.

Successful mid-major AD's should be hiring proven head coaches from lower levels.

Of course, not that every Big 10 assistant will fail as a a head coach (Tom Izzo), but the chances of you making a great hire are much better if you hire a proven winner at a lower level than rolling the dice on unproven assistant coach....

Look at this list of coaches: Lisa Carlson, Jerry Kill, Bill Self, Dick Bennett, Tony Bennett, Brian Wardle, Todd Kowalczyk (UWGB-Toledo), Thad Motta, Steve Alford, Bo Ryan, Mark Turgeon, John Bielen, Lou Henson (was at New Mexico St before ILL), Dick Versace (juco head coach before Bradley), to name a few who proved themselves as winning head coaches before moving on to bigger schools. Excellent coaches will win at the whatever level they are at...and will prove themselves at lower levels first...

Heck, even John McDougal proved himself to a large degree as a very successful high school coach at West Aurora before NIU hired him.

I have said some good things about MM but this is pretty tacky.

I cannot see Clemson's Dabo all decked out in alma mater's Alabama gear?

MM needs to give up the glory days and focus on the present.
