I thought the same thing, but then you look at the computer rankings and it is tough to pick someone to bump down to bump you guys (or any rep from C-USA) up. The Cuse and VCU wins look good, but they just didn't do enough to move you guys up the ladder.

Here is an advanced stats breakdown shamelessly borrowed from Reddit. The 12s and 13s are KenPom Top 100 for the most part (only 13 St. Louis comes in over at 104 and is still better ranked than ODU at 112).

As regular season and conference tournament champions of a better conference than Northeastern, who didn't even win the CAA regular season, we should have been seeded higher. When we were in the CAA, the computer ratings had us in the top 25 and we got 12, 11, and 9 seeds. Now all of the sudden they are using the computer ratings?

I have less an issue with St. Louis. At least they won their tournament in a decent league.

I think they just used the NET ratings to seed any of the 1 bid leagues. Northeastern was 78, ODU 100. I agree that you pass the eye test much better than they do and it really isn't close. I haven't done a deep dive, but I think ODU is being punished a bit by the NET formula for close wins (which is really just a by product of your style of play). Much like with the RPI before it, teams and conferences are going to have to adjust to the new metric. Once we do, the NCAA will move the goal posts again.

Yep, our RPI is 63. The NET formula screwed us.

NET put way to much emphasis on margin of victory and efficiency ratings which is built into the formula.

Northeastern was higher than us in KenPom, NET, and RPI. There is not metric that says ODU should have been a lower seed than Northeastern.

Good teams blow other teams out. Our style does not prevent us from blowing teams out. Its just who we were this year.....struggle the entire game and then have someone step up in the last few minutes and pull out a close win. Better teams win by more points.

I don't see how that yellow A10 we beat gets an 8 and we get a 14 when we have nearly the same record as well. It makes you wonder if ODU had swept the pod and beaten USM and UAB if they would have moved up at all. Without the pod SOS help would we have been a 15? Its like they just have a line at 14 for "CUSA champ here". I cant imagine WKU or any of the pod 1 teams would have been a 15. But what do I know? I thought ODU should have been a 12.

Because VCU had a much tougher schedule and they are ranked much higher across the board.

USM or WKY might have been 14s, but anyone else would have been lower.

You gotta be a top 50/60 team to be a 12. We were around 100.

It's gonna get ugly. ODU hasn't been playing good basketball since they clinched the 1 seed. Tech and UAB literally choked away wins against them by missing free throws. They should have been out in the Quarters. Obviously they survived, but that's not going to happen again Purdue. I wish ODU the best of luck, but this one could get ugly.

We're the underdogs now though, none of the expectations. I think (or hope at least) they'll be ready to play. It's going to be tough sledding regardless.

Hopefully, BJ and Ahmad get out of their slumps. Let it all hang out as this is the last go round.

I like the matchup. Purdue is the type of team we usually do well against. But yeah, I wish we were clicking on all cylinders. We'll see.

I will say conferences sometimes show their true strength or weakness in a tournament like this. And so far today, the Big 10 hasn't looked great (outside of Minnesota's upset over Louisville). Michigan State struggled to beat Bradley, and Maryland escaped with a 2-point win over Belmont.

Talk to Judy MC Clueless for the great job taking CUSA from the top 1/3 of Conferences to the bottom third. Smaller conferences have better TV exposure than us.
