Cline is one of the most extreme 3 point shooters in the nation. He struggles inside the arc (mainly on 2 pointers outside of the paint.....26% field goal percentage). He's not going to drive and draw fouls, why would anyone want to play off one of the best 3 points shooters in the nation?

It is called help defense and we have to take our chances. I was speaking more of Edwards from a driving the ball perspective. Cline is a elite shooter but Edwards can kill you in more ways than 1. I am not too worried about Haarms,

My response was to you saying to play off Cline and let him shoot the 3.

(hi Purdue message board guys)

Just to help you Boilermaker fans out, we do play a very in your face man to man defense, but can also throw in a 1-3-1 zone. Also, our starting 7 footer usually doesn't play many minutes and we rotate in another more agile 7 footer and go small with a 6'7ish freshman at the position as well.

Just wanted to post this, they seem to enjoy our board. haha

https://purdue.forums.rivals.com/threads/odu.167233/

Also, we didn't play AZ St this year. So yeah, let's hope our coaches are doing a better job on their scouting reports than we are. Must be thinking of our collapse to Oregon St. And this guy is worried about Marquis Godwin (Broke his foot 2 months ago):

All good. We were talking about how good Edwards is.

Hi Boilermakers! I'm going to invite my neighbor across the street over to watch the game with me. He went to Purdue and is a huge fan, so will make for some fun watching. We immediately texted each other during selection show.

P.S. Indiana sucks. 03-nutkick

RE: ODU vs Purdue
Purdue is a really complete team. We will need BJ to snap out of his funk, an off night from Edwards, JJ to outcoach Matt painter, and to hit our free throws like we did in the last 2 games of the CUSA tourney in order to pull off the upset.

While that seems like a lot to ask, there is some positive news. We won the CUSA tourney with basically our C+, B- game.

The second half against VCU and our comeback win against Syracuse, that’s what our A game looks like. If we can string together our A game for 40 minutes, we can absolutely beat Purdue.

Our guards match up well with theirs from an athletic standpoint and our bigs matchup well from a size perspective.

They are more skilled, but we might be tougher, deeper and more experienced.

My kingdom for our A game!!

Yes indeed. I think they’ll be ready. Been a while since we’ve played as an underdog. All the pressure, none of the expectation. And if we’ve learned anything about this team it’s they don’t give up when they’re down. A first half b game and second half a game may be enough if they play the opposite. But I’d love to see them put it all together. Let’s Go Monarchs!

What would your strategy be if you put on your Brad Stevens hat?

We are going to play man, it's what we do. Maybe we throw in a wrinkle with a 1-3-1, but Purdue shoots so often and so well from 3 that that would be a huge risk. Plus they are really good at offensive rebounding which we would give up a lot of O-boards.

What we'll end up doing is the same defensively we do every game. Try to cut off the lane, make them shoot long jumpers and contested 3s. I think we will see more Dickens/Kalu than we saw vs. WKY.

They are going to shoot a lot of 3s, we just gotta hope they are somewhat contested and they miss them.
I think you nailed the approach. I also think it's not our defense that we need to worry about. We play great defense, we limit possessions, they aren't going to score a hundred points on us. The key to us winning this game will be the offensive end. If we make shots consistently we have a chance. If we struggle to score we lose. We need to limit bad shots and turnovers, rebound well, make free throws, shoot at least our average from three, and get a few transition baskets. If we can do all of that, we have a decent chance to pull off the upset.

RE: ODU vs Purdue
My quick keys...ODU must switch effectively off their screens, if they get open looks they will bury us from three. They simply have more and better shooters than ODU. Next, Purdue doesn't turn the ball over, so ODU must not allow points off TOs keep them behind. Finally, ODU must get extra possessions and second chance points off ORBs. Purdue shoots better, so we need more shots to stay even.

RE: ODU vs Purdue
Purdue shouldnt have been a 3 seed and ODU shouldnt have been a 14. We are playing with house money! I feel like BJ will snap out of his funk and this will be a very close game. Just like we like it!

Getting Perdue to TO will be key, they avg 10.9. The ODU is 19-0 when they turn a team over +10.

That would be the Brad Stevens approach. Take the opponents' biggest strength... in Purdue's case it is protecting the ball... and run a game plan to neutralize it.
