I think we should, absolutely.
Now let me answer your question.
Wichita State made the move to the AAC. This season they were 10-8 in conference. They can't afford to keep playing Gregg Marshall $3.5m a year if the don't make the NCAA's, and that road has gotten much more difficult for them.
Yeah, I understand that they're not playing football, and that the increased conference money will be a big help - but they are no longer the big fish in a small pond, dominating every season.
There have not been many teams in this year's tournament that I felt certain that UAB could have beaten.

UAB can WANT to join a "better conference", but conferences are essentially like private clubs so one must FIRST be INVITED to join. WANTING to join does not matter if the INVITATION is not offered. Have any of our insiders heard of any such "invite" for a revenue sport arriving on the southside since 12/2/14 and are keeping it a secret?
IMHO I believe that in 2014 Dr Watts thought C-USA would grant UAB a waiver and allow it to remain in the conference as a BB only school. When C-USA stated UAB would be out in 2015, he realized he might become forever known as the President who killed UAB athletics.
UAB basketball would not have been strong enough to carry the whole Athletic Department alone without a conference affiliation - and none had been publicly offered. Without a conference, home games during the winter conference season might have been almost nonexistant. Imagine a program with no home games from Jan. to March Madness.

Just how much would UAB have to increase its budget level to match the bottom and then the median program in the AAC? How realistic is it to desire to close whatever deficit may exist between UAB's budget and these two AAC programs?
Per the 16-17 USA financial database revenues, Our budget was 25 Million, The lowest CAA budget was 48 million - UAB would need to increase over 20 million. The median CAA budget is 58 million - UAB would need to increase over 30 Million.
IMHO UABs budget will increase to around 30 million at the time of new stadium- thus why I used my estimate of a 15 Million needed
You could get $10-12M of that difference just from the conference affiliation. $7M from TV vs $400k, several million more in NCAA tournament credits, and higher bowl payouts. Then throw in increased ticket sales in football and basketball to reflect our much improved schedule and you're practically there.

"American" or "AAC", not "CAA", which is the "Colonial Athletic Association".
