We spent a million dollars on a score board for basketball!
Why?

I doubt very many students would pay them if they were optional. Except for Ohio St. type schools that would mean a huge change in Athletic Departments (if they even existed anymore). Measures like this are also tied into reducing funding of new buildings, cutting back on personal, etc. With all the talk about the high costs of college I don’t think mandatory sports fees would be very popular if it became a topic of political discussion.

Gotta be more careful. It doesn't take a lot to spark the powder keg of "drop D1 football" on here and once you do, there's no stopping it.

Any idea how much each student is paying per semester? I had friends that complained about it when I was in school. I was thinking it wasn't a huge amount though. One thing worth noting is Kent students get into games for free which isn't true of OSU. Not that that makes a difference to students that don't care about sports.

Going by memory it was about $750. Compared to overall costs not much but times four years not insignificant. Also I’m not sure with the high rate of college costs I’d be happy subsidizing other students.

Kent students pay $769 17-18 year. by comparison zippy students pay $1359, OU $716, YSU $1028 TOL $1135, Miami, 1327, BG 872.

I would assume that the Wisconsin game would be in the $1 million range so that would put the total near $4.5 million for playing 3 games. Add in the $800k from tickets that makes it over $5 million which is 1/6 of the total athletic department expenses. Seems like football is pulling its weight.

We have 1-2 womens programs that we must fund do to title 9. Drop football a level thus decreasing men’s scholarships and we can stop 1-2 other programs that do not bring in any revenue.

Which programs are you wanting them to cut? The university just added lacrosse so chances are even if they dropped football down they would keep all of the women's programs.

Forget all this chump change. Mike Trout just signed a 12 year contract for $430 million. Take that Bryce Harper.

I can't believe he would take such a low number. Maybe we should be talking about raising minimum wage so baseball players can make a living wage!

Maybe by cutting football they would fully be compliant with womens sports. However, if there are more womens scholarships they could cut a team or add another mens team that has been cut in the past. Soccer, gymnastics or add a new upcoming sport like lacrosse.

Dropping down a division in football does not automatically equate to an increased focus on basketball and/or turn us into Gonzaga overnight. BTW, the little football success we’ve had over the years generated more enthusiasm and national recognition than our basketball success. The huge run we had years ago came and went and is now just a fading memory with little to no effect on recruits.

You couldn’t be more wrong. Look at our run in 2002. Talk to administrators. The numbers of students wanting to apply to KSU doubled. That led to us being more selective in who we allowed in. We created academic standards. Those students graduated since they were a higher caliber of student. With a higher graduation percentage we received more money from the state because they base a portion of their money on that rate. With more money academic programs expanded. Dorms were built to accommodate the new students. We have expanded ever since that year of basketball. So sir, that run in 2002 propelled the university. Quite the opposite of close to 50 years of embarrassment in the football program.
And it fizzled quickly as tradition eventually graduated. You have one agenda here, to bang on football every step of the way as you’ve proven with every one of your 245 posts. Somehow someway you think by getting rid of football would take us back to that miracle run on a permanent basis and it is just never going to happen. Football is vital to this area, want more focus on basketball then open the checkbook.

I take offense to your get out your check book I do write multiple checks to the sports I appreciate and that show a winning tradition. Football vital to the area? Is that why we dont schedule against OSU or big HS weekends? My posts? Yes half bang on football because they bring our university down. They are a losing team and will always be one. If they ever win I will not attend because I wont be hypocritical. I promise when football drops a level in the next ten years I will only gloat one time. I further promise that when Coach Beard gets a winning record for one year and bolts I will only write one time. The university has done studies showing that MBB is where we can make a significant impact nationally. Hopefully,
a new president will remove our D5 punter and we will get an AD that will see that move MBB to the forefront. I will admit that three paid games is great. Hopefully, we can get to four over the next few years.

I sincerely apologize for starting this thread. However our friend Elton Alexander has an interesting article today about how Buffalo has decided to promote basketball (highest paid coach in MAC, no pro basketball in Buffalo, a coach who will stay because he is interested in Michigan, Michigan St. job and will wait it out for a shot at one) and is trying to use D1 money football games to negotiate to get Power5 home games for their basketball team. Elton suggests Toledo and Akron could follow the same model. Not Kent of course as we are located in limbo. Not close enough to Cleveland(plus the Cavs dominate) and Akron’s little sister (at least in Akron). Of course Elton’s bias probably plays a role too. Anyway it’s not a bad read at Cleveland.com. Kent93 you are not allowed to use any of this to add to your theory.

Interesting article. He was in error in not mentioning that OU also has an "elite eight". Granted, it was 55 years ago and the field was only 25 teams and OU won two games, not three as did Kent State. But I remember it well, as I was a freshman at KSU at the time. I suppose Elton's scenario MAY be possible for a Toledo, but I can't see Akron getting Power 5 teams to play there. Funny, he mentions Buffalo's commitment to basketball. I though that is what Kent State claimed, too!

Don’t sell yourself short, you’re now up to 246 posts in over 5.5 years almost all trashing football...it’s downright nauseating at this point.

BTW, the comment about the checkbook is directed to anybody not content with their sports funding as that is how the school works. Look at all the sports and the donations have flowed from big checkbooks, want BBall to get the prime focus then find the big dollars and convince them to kick in.

Damn. I need to bite my tongue after reading the article. Thanks for passing it on. I do want to say I enjoy this string and regardless of opinion I am proud to know everyone here is a proud supporter of KSU.
