RE: Future Sun Belt Commissioner?
It appears Keith Gill is being named commissioner. Executive commissioner from the A10.

Reading about his time at American U, Richmond and the A10 seems promising.

Wait...our other finalists were Tom Bowen and Kathy Keene? So...we really wanted to hire Gil from the beginning and just threw a couple token interviews together to make it look like a "search"

RE: Soccer
With the academy system taking off the caliber of men's college soccer is dropping. The MLS Super Draft is producing fewer significant players. The short season and practice limits, coupled with rules variations make it less viable for the player looking for a pro career.

The NCAA has squandered the opportunity for men's soccer to be a vital link in the game in the US.

No.
Keene would have been a great choice and was thought to be the front-runner. Search firm is the one who pushed Gill who has the thinnest resume ever for a Sun Belt commissioner.

Thinnest ever?

- AD for 10 years at American and Richmond. He won an award while at Richmond for National AD of the year.

- Assistant AD at Vandy

- Worked as Sr. Associate AD at Oklahoma for 3 years

- Worked 8 years with the NCAA national office

- Executive Assoc. Commissioner of the A10 for 3 years

I did not stutter

Resigned at Richmond because neither the boosters nor coaches had any confidence in him and did not have a good working relationship with the academic side. They had several players he approved the recruitment of that he couldn't convince the school to admit, including a grad transfer who ended up being the starter at Xavier.

A10 job? Position created for him when he "resigned" at Richmond. Older Sun Belt fans recall the same thing being done when FIU fired Rick Mello.

And yes. Thinnest resume ever.

Benson. Commissioner of WAC and MAC prior to Sun Belt.
Waters. Commissioner of the Southern and had been head of the University of Alabama's sports marketing arm.
Thompson. Came to American South as first ever commissioner. Prior to that Director of Communications for the Metro. Held similar job in the NBA and also that role at Kansas State.
Bubas. Vice-President at Duke University, previously head coach at Duke who took Duke to the Final Four three times, the first ever Final Four appearances for Duke. His assistant commissioner left to be commissioner of the Missouri Valley

Yeah. Thinnest resume ever.

He may turn out to be great but compare his resume to the guy the Big Sky hired last year. Executive at

His resume is more on par with Beth DeBauche, commissioner of the Ohio Valley. Arguably her resume was stronger because she's an attorney and has held substantive positions, though his mixed results at AD I think equates his experience to hers. We ought to be hiring a notch above the OVC. Now DeBauche has done a damn good job, but it isn't the level of experience our past hires have had.

The way I understand it you're not correct about what happened at Richmond. He was being the hardliner on the academic side and the football coach quit because he couldn't get his desired recruits admitted because they were not up to snuff in their grades. I have no problem with that type of integrity.

His experience at the NCAA office is something the previous leaders did not bring.

One of the basketball players that was passed over ended up at Xavier. Are you suggesting Xavier has no integrity? At what point do your admissions requirements for athletes get so high that you've gone from "integrity" to myopia?

I don't really know how much that will affect him as a commissioner, but I wouldn't want that "integrity" as an AD.

That's not how it was reported. It was reported as he blessed the recruitment of those players and then was unable to convince the school to admit them.

One landed at a conference rival in football and the other at a conference rival in basketball.

NCAA office experience isn't that impressive if you have worked in athletics.

The reason he left Richmond was he “couldn’t keep” Danny Rocco from leaving and got cross wazed with a major booster over it

Interesting. Care to share the source of that information?

Nevermind, TB, I found out by making a few calls and doing some research. I thought it may be something serious, but turned out it was small potatoes.
