Man Gives Up All Food And Drink For Lent…Except For Beer...(update)

I gave up beer for lent one year and it was not an easy task. Will be curious to see if this man can pull this off. Talk about a constant buzz....

Quote:An Ohio man is fasting from food for Lent and will drink only beer until Easter Sunday, like a 17th century German monk.

Del Hall, an employee of Fifty West Brewing Company, said that though he has done a four-day water fast, distinguished himself in the Army, and run a marathon, the challenge of consuming only beer and water for the 46 days seems daunting to him. Hall took his cue for this fast from German monks of the 1600s who, during the Christian liturgical season of Lent, consumed only a certain style of relatively nutritious beer until Easter.

“Being master brewers, they decided they would take a popular style of beer in Germany, bock beer, make it extra hearty and that would be their liquid bread and that’s what they call it,” Hall said according to Idaho News. “So the monks in Bavaria, they would call doppelbock liquid bread and basically it would sustain them through the 46 days of Lent.”

Hall will document his Lent beer diet on social media, where he will document how he feels how his weight changes throughout the fast.

“I’m an Army veteran, I was number one in my class in the Army, I’ve run a full marathon before, 26.2 miles, I’ve done big challenges but this seems very daunting,” he said. “So I’m just curious if I’m up to the challenge, if I’m going to be able to do it or not.”

The Belgian beers all come from monks back in the day who fasted all during Lent. That's also why they are so filling.

He would be fine with just water. His body would go into ketosis and autophagy, stem cell creation would occur. He'd be fine - people can live a lot longer than they think with just water. My wife did a strict water fast for 30 days and her health improved tremendously. (She did it because she was diagnosed with MS... now the doctors say she doesn't have it.)

But beer = carbs and calories. He could starve to death.

Wow.

Yep. It caused new stem cell growth and she's doing great. So well, in fact, that we decided to have baby #2. 6 months pregnant currently.

Congratulations!

If you have one kid it is a piece of cake. When you have two kids the work load doesn't double it quadruples. Three or more kids and it all feels the same just more mouths to feed.

I was always told this...

With 1 kid, you can run double coverage.

With 2 kids, it's straight man to man coverage.

With 3 or more, you sit back in a zone and hope one of them doesn't score.

Thanks! We're pumped. 1 boy, and soon to be 1 girl. I think we're done after 2 kids.

My wife has Muscular System Atrophy. I wonder if this would help or if they're similar? I sure would like my wife to get better. I can only pray for her because the doctors don't know how to cure it.

Second that. We are so lucky in the Cincinnati area with the diversity and quality of the product from our local breweries. Love me some 50 West, Rivertown, March First, Rheingeist, Madtree, Tafts, and lots of smaller ones.

My older brother is a beer fanatic, he gives it up for Lent every year. I'm just not that devout.

Odd that you say that, about the only beer I can drink without becoming bloated is regular old Blue Moon. I can drink it like water. But it's the only one I've come across that I could drink that way. I'm sure there are others but beer is not high on my list of favorite beverages.

An update to this thread....

Quote:An Ohio man didn't eat any food for 46 days. Instead, he spent Lent downing craft beer.

Del Hall, who says he drinks beer for a living, works at Cincinnati's Fifty West Brewing Company. Hall wasn't buzzed because he spaced out the alcoholic beverages throughout each day. The army veteran lost 44 pounds over the course of about 40 days after being inspired to try an old Catholic tradition'

"I'm having so much fun with all this," Hall told "Fox & Friends First" Tuesday. "Being a beer guy, you always hear this story about the monks in Bavaria, like in the 1600s, that they gave up all solid food for Lent and they only drank this special kind of beer that they called doppelbock. It's got a lot of nutrients in it, a lot of carbohydrates, and a lot of sugar."

He added: "And I always wondered: Is that real? Can you really do that or not? So I decided I'd give it a whirl this year and try it out for myself."

Hall documented his journey on social media, giving updates daily and tracking his weight.

H20 is easily my fave element....not only is it critical to life (as we know it), but it's the only one that defies 'heat expands/cold contracts'

that's awesome for you and your family.....

I generally drink between 6 - 8 bottles of Kroger water a day. I'm addicted to it. The only other beverage I consume with any regularity is coffee. I had a coke Tuesday for the first time in years, it still sucks. I will drink some IBC root beer occasionally, I love that stuff.

I've been doing the intermittent fasting since start of Feb. I basically only consume calories between 2-10pm. I've dropped 30ish pounds since then with maybe 2 days of exercise a week.

I can certainly feel the difference in my knees when I play soccer.
