West Coast Championship: #1 Gonzaga/Saint Mary’s
BYU’s found out the hard way what it’s like to be in a league with the 2 West Coast behemoths.

Zags will likely win big, but this game is the first real chance for a bid thief to push a team off of the bubble.

If Gonzaga loses, do they make the tournament?

Hehe, a .500 Big Ten is hoping hard for this to be true.

Well that is the first quality win all year for St. Mary's. They were I think #28 in NET, but a bad resume. Sort of settles the question of whether they deserve to be in.

Congratulations to St. Mary’s! They earned the win. I’m always glad to have conference mates in the tournament. I’m thinking we get the #2 seed in the West unless there’s some upsets in the ACC tournament.

Going by Lunardi's bracket, Ohio State was bumped out by Saint Mary's win, and Temple was bumped from the main field into the first four.
FWIW, the first two now out in his bracket, Ohio State and Indiana, play each other in the first game of the day on Thursday in the Big Ten tournament. Each of those teams was 8-12 in Big Ten conference games.

True. But it was the University of San Diego that embarrassingly bumped BYU out this year. And it was the University of San Francisco that earned a tough, late-season, come-from-behind victory in Provo that kept BYU from the 2-seed in the WCC tournament.

They had a quality win over New Mexico State on the road, winning 73-58. NMSU has a 27-4 record and a Net Ranking of 46. I was surprised by the win, especially by 13 points. The night before they struggled with San Diego, winning by seven, but the game was much closer than that.

They had neutral court losses to LSU and Miss8ssippi State by 4, neutral court to Utah State and a home loss to UC Irvine. They had some ooc beef but only a 1-4 record to show for it

Nobody believes NMSU is close to their NET. Frankly neither is SMC. I have seen both teams, while good for mid-majors, they lack the physicality and athleticism of the major programs. Both are one and done 11 or 12 seeds.
In the back of my mind, I almost think Mark Few threw this game as a bone to the WCC.

Last year’s Saint Mary’s team with 3 star seniors and an All American misses the tournament. This year’s rebuilding Saint Mary’s team makes it. Crazy.

If the NET Rankings say they are a top 50 team, then they are a top 50 team. If we were using RPI, NMSU would be #38. They received 16 votes for the AP Top 25, which got them up to #30. St. Mary's has a Net Ranking of 34 and an RPI ranking of 36. KenPom has St. Mary's at #29. At some point, the reality is that both teams are being ranked in the top 50 in multiple listings. They must be Top 50 teams.
I would doubt that Mark Few would throw a game. St. Mary's wanted it more and that just happens sometimes. Gonzaga may still end up being a #1 seed, so the loss does not really hurt and may help get them even more focused for the tournament.
