Former Yale women's soccer coach allegedly accepted a $400,000 bribe to ensure an applicant would be admitted as a member of the team. That applicant didn't play soccer. Her profile was altered

Thst same coach allegedly agreed to ensure a second student would be accepted. For a mere $450,000

That's the bribe for the influencer in the admissions decision. Imagine how much of a bribe they would be willing to offer a member of the committee who actually says yes/no for admission.

Can't imagine. The mastermind, Rick Singer, was paid $1.2 million in this particular Yale incident.

The way it sounded like the way the PAC 12 play in sports? They could have given scholarships to so-so athletes that are not good at sports. The athletes who are not good enough in grades have people take the ACT and SAT to get those athletes in the door. This kind of crap have been going on for years when athletes that are good enough or not find ways to get into the back doors. I would not be surprise that the schools are involved in this scam as well.

Dean Martin : [Barbay has arrived at the groundbreaking of the new Melon School of Business] Ah, Phillip... so glad you could make it. Mr. Melon, this is Dr. Phillip Barbay. He's the dean of our new Melon School of Business.

Dr. Phillip Barbay : [Thornton extends his hand, Barbay refuses it and takes Martin aside] David, I just want to get it on record that I am totally against this. I don't think that selling admission to an obviously unqualified student is either ethical or honorable.

Dean Martin : Uh, right... Phil. In Mr. Melon's defense, it was a really big check.

Dr. Phillip Barbay : [glaring at Martin in dismay] It's a simple matter of undermining the efforts of our best students, who are here as the result of hard work!

Thornton Melon : [chiming in] Hard work? Listen, Sherlock! While you were tucked away up here working on your ethics, I was out there busting my hump in the REAL world. And the reason guys like you got a place to teach is 'cause guys like me donate buildings.

Dr. Phillip Barbay : I wasn't speaking to you, Mr. Melon.

I have to think, if you went to any college/university with $500k, they would take your kid and let him flunk out after a semester. That's some pretty good baby-sitting money right there!

RE: breaking- more indictments- new schools involved
The scandal extends to USD as well. The University of San Diego.

https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/new...story.html

Investigators say Martin Fox was part of a complicated scheme to get students admitted to such elite schools as USD, the University of Southern California and Yale — by helping them to cheat on entrance exams or to create false athletic records that would make their application look better...

The Justice Department indicted says Singer funneled some of the bribe money through Fox, who is described as the president of a private tennis academy and camp in Houston. “Fox arranged... bribes, on two occasions, with a varsity sports coach at USD,” the indictment says. “In or about 2016, in change for a bribe paid through Fox, the coach designated (that) the son of one of Singer’s clients, who did not play the sport, as a recruit for the university’s team, thereby facilitating his admission to USD. “Singer paid Fox approximately $100,000 for arranging the bribe”

The indictment also says, “In or about 2017, in exchange for the promise of an additional bribe, the coach designated another student as a recruit to manage the coach’s team, thereby facilitating her admission to USD. “Although the student ultimately decided not to attend USD, Singer paid the USD coach $10,000 for his help in securing her admission.”

USD officials were preparing a statement on the matter late Tuesday morning.

For UC San Diego's sake, I hope this does not involve them too. Academic fraud is the one thing that would cause the Big West to rescind their invitation. And hypothetically speaking, if UCSD were to lose their invite before 2020 then Cal State Bakersfield will as well, even though the latter has nothing to do with this hoopla.

One of my favorites:

Professor Terguson (Sam Kinison): You remember that thing we had about 30 years ago called the Korean conflict? And how we failed to achieve victory? How come we didn't cross the 38th parallel and push those rice-eaters back to the Great Wall of China? Then take the ******* wall apart brick by brick and nuke them back into the ******* stone age forever? Tell me why! How come? Say it! Say it!

Thornton Melon: All right. I'll say it. 'Cause Truman was too much of a ***** wimp to let MacArthur go in there and blow out those Commie bastards!

Professor Terguson: Good answer. Good answer. I like the way you think. I'm gonna be watching you.

The NBC report says "In all, 44 people, some of them college coaches, have been charged thus far". No details given. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/fed...ot-n982136

The list of coaches is olympic sports..... Like Loughlin's daughter- Crew. Think Georgetown was Tennis.
One of those also arrested was Mark Riddell, who until today was College Entrance Exam and Preparation for IMG Academy. He was flying from city to city taking entrance exams to the point of mimicking handwriting. No telling if he did it for football and basketball there.

Coaches took bribes to accept or give applicants added advantages of having a sports background. Hundreds of thousands, up to $400,000. Big trouble. This is probably just the tip of the iceberg. There are currently 300 FBI agents working this case.

Wrong. It is possible to do so badly that they kick you out after a semester. I had a guy living next to me Freshman year that pulled it off.

I notice that so far there haven't been any men's hoops or football coaches involved.

This is what happens when you give a low paid employee - like a coach of a minor sport like Crew or Tennis - a coveted organizational power, in this case the ability to admit entry to an elite university.
