That most definitely didnt happen.
Nope, there were plenty of seats around where we were!

In fact, they did their best to ensure the opposite. I can’t imagine they’ll have more than 250 fans in there tonight.

My guess from being at the game on sunday northeastern had around 30 fans at game and Hofstra had around 75. That is not counting band, cheerleaders or dance team.

Sad. Plus neither of the schools being anything near close to Charleston it’s unlikely that they would send a bus of fans down.

Yeah, it's really not even feasible with last nights game wrapping up about what 10? It's a 14 hour drive from Long Island and 16 from Boston. So, even if they wanted too, it's really not something that could be pulled off due to time constraints alone.

I blame the CAA for thinking that adding a hockey school and several bad basketball programs from big northeastern markets would be a good thing.

This is where we are now. Thanks Yeager.

The southern teams have carried this league for years, both in success and attendance. The one year it failed to get a team into the championship game, they should collectively feel bad? Nah. The way this league is set up, a northern-based title game was bound to happen eventually. Just funny to me that it ended up being 2 pretty good programs who get absolutely zero fan support.

Next year, the tournament moves to DC, which will cost the league a lot of its usual southern attendees. So this is just a mere preview of what the next 3 years could be like. So yeah, the current CAA leadership made their beds and now get to lie in it.

Smaller arena so it won't look as bad... I'm staying open minded about DC, I think it could be a good host city for what the CAA has become.

RE: 2019 men caa basketball tournament
DC is better than Baltimore. Charleston was too far south and favored CofC home cooking too much. Honestly, everyone is ripping these "northeastern" teams but they beat our southern asses and made the finals. Seems senseless to knock them when they earned their stripes this year.

I miss the old days of the CAA more than anyone and would not be opposed to switching conferences. However, we don't have a leg to stand on. Basketball program is way down and hasn't sustained success in almost 2 decades. Oh yeah, we don't have football either. Come to think of it, we have very little that is that attractive about us if you are another regional conference looking to expand.

EDIT: I may have been a litte harsh on our athletics program. I do agree the conference leaders made some horrible long term and short term strategic errors. The push for FCS expansion burned us. The current TV deal is the absolute worst crap I have ever seen. The Big South has better coverage and is more accessible.

I don’t think anyone is knocking the northern teams. It’s more of a knock on their schools inability to create legitimate fan bases and how that ends up hurting the CAA and by extension, their fellow CAA schools. Hofstra and NE deserve to be in that title game, absolutely. The CAA deserves having the shell of an arena they’re going to get as well for making poor decisions with lasting impact.

Completely agree that we are stuck with this crap conference for what seems like a long future due to the reasons you gave. Sadly, we don’t have any chips to push in to better it because of those same reasons. It’s a mess.

Speaking of blaming the CAA, I remember going to the CAA Championship game in Charleston in 2017. The game was UNCW vs Charleston, so the crowd was as good as it was going to get. But their were still a lot of empty seats, both in the lower and upper tiers.

I distinctly remember thinking (and verbalizing) that - given the fact that this was the CAA's once-a-year chance to display itself to a real national audience - that if I were Commissioner I would have directed the ushers to invite folks sitting upstairs to come down and fill empty seats in the lower bowl in order to make TV shots look as good as possible.

Obviously that didn't happen.

It will be interesting to see what, if anything, creative "JoeyD" does to make the crowd look bigger tonight...

I attended the first session on Sunday. I saw tons of people successfully move from the upper section to the lower section (including a bunch who were near me so I was able to recognize them once I saw them below). The only reason I didn't move is because I was in row 1 of the upper tier and I liked the sight lines even better from up there (plus I could be loud and raucous and not bother anyone near me).

So, at least in that session, there were no adverse actions from any ushers preventing fans from moving.

They were checking tickets in the uncw section and would not let some of our fans move on sunday.when our game ended the usher left and Charleston fans moved into our section.

That sucks! Crap like that really bothers me. Just like the three free throws at the end of the NE-CofC game. I hate to say it, but stuff like that is why the CAA is rinky-dink and likely to always remain rinky-dink.

There was a reason that Tom Yeager became the longest-tenured Commissioner of any sports conference in America. No one else wanted to hire him away from the CAA. "JoeyD" was a compliance bureaucrat before becoming our current Commissioner.

Not a visionary bone in their bodies. I really blame the schools for putting up with that. When it gets to the point that your conference championship game is being played in an empty arena and being televised on a network that nobody watches you would think that SOMEBODY at the schools would get a clue that the hired help at the conference office might not be the best that money can buy.

In the case of UNCW, I blame our administration(s) for lack of vision over the years as well.

Just as the "Catholic 7" split from the old Big East (now AAC) and formed a confernce that got an automatic bid to the NCAA's, you would think that SOMEBODY would have come up with a proactive vision for putting together a group of similarly situated basketball-only (ie, non football playing) schools that makes more sense for all concerned.

Maybe our current chancellor, with his business background, might be less passive in this regard...

The NCAA changed the rules after the Big East split. It used to be a group of schools who had been together for X amount of years made a conference and therefore got an automatic bid. That allowed for conference splits.

Now the current conferences are basically given an auto bid as long as they have 7 schools. Who the 7 schools are and how long they have been together is irrelavant. Starting a new conference from scratch would mean going 7 or 8 years without an auto bid until the conference established itself as an NCAA D1 conference.

The CAA needs to pick a geographical direction and either UNCW/CoC or Hofstra/Northeastern need to find new homes

Big proponent of north south divisions. Blame Hofstra for that not happening
