2. It is a promotion as I don't believe he had been named co coordinator at ODU.
3. Job security. It is widely speculated that if there is not marked improvement in 2019, Wilder is out. That means that then entire staff would likely be out as well unless an existing assistant was given the HC job and wanted to maintain continuity.

I was actually thinking Galen Scott might become our head coach after next season if he made a good impression.
Based on what? I'm not sure what qualifications he has for a head coaching gig.
Just based on his past performance and reputation. They said he was going to be the heir apparent to Bud Foster at VT, and Bud has been sought after as a head coach, so why not Galen. Not at a P5 level, but for a struggling G5 team, it might have been worth the risk. We'll never know.
There’s no reason he couldn’t be a candidate when we are hiring.

If anyone has the potential to lead our program post Wilder, it will be Bryan Stinespring. His first week here he did a segment with Bruce Rader about his ties with this area. I feel like he is committed to this job and will be the future that turns this program into something special. I also feel that he is paid better than his predecessor. He was at VT while they became relevant. David Blackman has Clemson in his blood.
It's always grand to have a good coaching staff to guide the kids and to come up with strategies to win. Based off what I saw last year was our team was physically challenged in so many ways that they failed. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around how we managed to win two games where we were 28-point underdogs but that's another story. For me I want to see how much more physical our kids can be and they should because Dwight Galt our new strength and conditioning coach has a little bit of Penn State, Maryland and a side of South Carolina on his plate. He's bringing that knowledge to Old Dominion.
If we flatten Norfolk State in August we could be onto something. If you look at our track record that first game we play of the new season says a lot about who we will be that year.
Time will tell I guess...

Just about all of my colleagues who are close to VT said he's a wonderful recruiter and coach but NEVER ever let him call plays in a game. (Stinespring that is)

This.
The Tech offense was awful when Stinespring was calling the plays.

RE: G Scott
Tech fans are a special group of people.
The way there were overblown about the Stinespring calling plays lacks basic common sense. They want a scapegoat and cant blame old fashioned Frank.
FWIW, here are VTs offensive rankings according to FO (since 2005-1st year available). FWIW, the 02 to 04 offenses would have ranked very high.
05- 20
06- 64
07- 65
08- 89
09- 12
10- 12
11- 27
12- 63
IMO, Stinespring would make a great representative of ODU. I give props to Wilder for having the balls to hire someone with Stinesprings credentials, who could be a future head coach.

I'd be willing to take a chance on Stinespring vs what we've seen from our known entities here.
