Nice to see coach Fickell coming up to Toledo to speak to 500-700 football fans / high school football kids in NW Ohio. I have seen Tressel, Kelly, Meyer and Harbaugh speak at this event before and it is always a packed house downtown at the Seagate Convention Centre. If any local fans have an interest in attending, shoot me a PM. I'll try to post a recap later this week of his talk, hopefully he knocks it out the park.
Quote:What a great season of high school and college football we have enjoyed. Congratulations to the 41 teams from our region that qualified for the state playoffs in Ohio and Michigan. We extend a hearty salute to Head Coach Kris Alge and the McComb Panthers for bringing home the OHSAA state championship trophy in Ohio and to the Attica Seneca East Tigers and Norwalk Truckers for their deep run into the semifinals of the Ohio OHSAA playoffs.
The 57th Annual Banquet of the Toledo/Wistert Chapter of the National Football Foundation and will be held on Monday, March 11 at 6:30 pm at the Seagate Convention Centre in downtown Toledo. The evening is a special time to honor those scholar athletes that have excelled on the field, in the classroom and in their community. A highlight of the banquet will be our Keynote Speaker, which will be University of Cincinnati – Head Football – Coach Luke Fickell. Coach Fickell excelled collegiately on the gridiron at The Ohio State University as a defensive lineman and briefly played for the New Orleans Saints in the NFL. Coach Fickell joined the Ohio State football staff in 1999, served a two year assignment with the University of Akron as the defensive line coach and rejoined Ohio State in 2002. He held a number of assignments with the Buckeyes and was honored in 2010 as Assistant Coach of the Year by the AFCA. He was promoted to head coach at Ohio State in 2011. In December, 2016 Mr. Fickell was named the head coach of the University of Cincinnati, where he has turned the program around and this past season recorded an 11-2 record and won the Military Bowl. Coach Fickell was named the Coach of the Year in the American Athletic Conference.
This event has enjoyed a steady attendance in excess of 500 guests throughout the years and is a wonderful way to entertain customers or support employees. Please make plans to join us as we honor the 2019 Hall of Fame Class of the Toledo/Wistert Chapter of the National Football Foundation and hear from one of the brightest young coaches in Division 1 football.

Imagine the local press and face time Fick is getting and how that helps build/maintain relationships, trust, and integrity with area high schools. Bearcat Nation making a splash in NW Ohio and we got a Meechigan OL transfer to boot. Dayum I can't wait for the season to start! I still can't believe how far we've come so quickly after Gran'pappy Grubbs left for his river guide tours gig.
This is always a well done event and Luke Fickell and Doug Phillips (RB coach) seemed wowed by the red carpet roll-out received. They came up after spring practice, stopped at the Children's Hospital, Fickell gave a brief talk to the 43 Scholar Athlete Awardees, came in to the VIP party and had a news conference setup for him, then got to give his talk from the podium in front of 600-700 people. Both the UT coach (Jason Candle) and the new BG coach (Scot Loeffler) were in attendance sitting up front and giving out scholarship awards to BG and UT players.
Fickell lead the 43 Scholar Athletes up to the podium while UC's fight song played. His talk was geared to the 43 Scholar Athletes, and he talked about living in the moment.
1. Relentless Focus
2. Embrace productive discomfort - uncomfortable going from big man on campus to everybody being of equal stature.
3. Use mistakes as Feedback, don't worry about failure...it's expected, learn from it. Fail falling forward.
4. Defeat fear - courage
5. Be coach-able - Don't get defensive when being critiqued - TEAM goals
Coach Fickell harped many times to any new College students or high school students starting the journey to *Find Those Trustworthy Leaders* in school or on your sporting team. No self made person, all of you (43 Scholar Athletes) had mentors along the way, now in college on your own finding yourself - * Find those Leaders in their respected fields.
Thanks for sharing Senior. Impressed by the size and coverage of this event. Given how much people put high school sports on a pedestal here in Cincinnati that we do not have an event of this size as well.

Having BCSN has certainly helped propel high school and semi-pro sports in NWOhio to a completely different level. There are some high school basketball and football games in the area that pull share ratings that register with Nielsen for the Toledo market now...and with the station moving into more live broadcasts and RUMORED to be moving to a live on-location pre-game show for football in the next few seasons, it's one hell of a feather in UT and the Toledo area's hat.
