Preseason Poll vs Final Regular Season Results
Reference this preseason poll that we put together this off-season: https://csnbbs.com/thread-861840.html

Preseason Poll:
1. WKU
2. Marshall
3. ODU
4. UNT
5. UTSA
6. USM
7. LT
8. UAB
9. UTEP
10. MTSU
11. FAU
12. Charlotte
13. FIU
14. Rice

Final Regular Season Results:
1. ODU
2. WKU
3. USM
4. UTSA
5. UAB
6. Marshall
7. FIU
8. LT
9. FAU
10. UNT
11. Rice
12. MTSU
13. Charlotte
14. UTEP

Here are some interesting tidbits:

The most correctly predicted teams = WKU and Charlotte at 6 votes each

The most incorrectly predicted teams = FIU, Marshall, UNT, and UTEP with 0.

I also measured votes that were just off by one. For example, if you picked WKU 1 or 3.

Teams that STILL did not get a vote correct (+/- 1) of their final result = UNT, UTEP

Top 3 voters who got the most teams in the correct position:
1. AustinFromUNT (4)
2t. Noodles (3)
2t. goherd24herdfans (3)

Top 3 voters who got the most teams correct PLUS teams off by one spot:
1. Stick4489 (8)
2. odu09 (7)
3. AustinFromUNT, Hilltopper2k, stanman505, Jack Bauer (6)

Finally, whether this is a good way of doing it or not, I assigned 1 point for every exactly predicted result and assigned 0.5 points for every pick off by one. The full ranking is here:

1. AustinFromUNT 5
1. Stick4489 5
3. odu09 4.5
4. Noodles 3.5
4. Hilltopper2K 3.5
4. stanman505 3.5
4. Jack Bauer 3.5
4. Franko 3.5
4. goherd24herdfans 3.5
4. ODU AGGIE 3.5
11. BeagleUSM 3
11. DragonLair 3
11. Rojogrande 3
11. freshtop 3
11. dmfdavid 3
16. LeeistheKey 2.5
16. WKUYG 2.5
16. WKUFan518 2.5
16. Dowless 2.5
20. AdoptedMonarch 2
20. herdfan129 2
22. mturn017 1.5
22. kem411ocd 1.5
22. Magic95Fan 1.5
25. MarshallHerdFanz 1

I thought about giving advanced weight so that the higher teams give more points than the lower teams, then decided I don't have that much time and it probably isn't that beneficial anyway. Cheers!

Conclusion: I believe AustinFromUNT has won. I'll give +2 when I can find you.

RE: Preseason Poll vs Final Regular Season Results
I think had MT fans known about all of the players on the roster leaving, then all of us (MT fans, that is) would have picked us last.

Not counting graduation we lost:

All 3 signees (one to Georgia, 2 to Ole Miss)

Our top returning scorer (transferred to Buffalo).

Our staring point guard and second-leading returning scorer (trans. to Missouri State).

Our sixth man, and possible starter David Simmons (kicked off the team-- trans to D-2 school- he did not have a year to sit out in order to transfer to D-1).

A good shooter and possible starter down the road (prized when we signed him)-- Shelton-Schmidt. Said he found a higher calling -- study to be a priest ??

Backup big man-- transferred to Troy State.

Then we had two current team members out for the season with injury.

Most recently, our starting point guard has missed the last 3 games due to some sort of leg injury.

So just making the tournament is a big accomplishment in my opinion.

Yeah, it was looking quite bleak in the preseason for you guys. Unfortunately, things were so bleak that no MT fan participated in the voting.

The life of a “non P5”. It sucks. The fans of these schools should be given trophies every few years for hanging through the good and the bad.

Wow. 'Twas bleak indeed.

And I'm sure UTEP as well.

It sucks (at our level) when a coach leaves, that it is almost inevitable that the program blows up for a year or two.

RE: Preseason Poll vs Final Regular Season Results
Pod play makes this meaningless. Nobody knows what the final standings would look like with a regular schedule (except ODU being first).

If not for Pod play, what would Marshall's last four games likely have been?

We still would have went 4-0.
