Basketball all-conference teams
Sorry for the premature click as I don't believe the awards will be announced until tomorrow. But looking through last year's awards, I see that the women announced an 8-person 1st team and 8-person 2nd team last year, with 5 players on both the all-freshmen team and all-defensive team. The men did 3 teams of 5 players each (1st, 2nd and 3rd team), with the 5-person freshmen and defensive teams.
So who do you got then? I don't think any of our men make all-conference, as we're just too balanced. Same with the defense team. I do think we have a chance at a couple of freshmen on that team. Obviously Bassey of WKU and UTEP's big guy are on it, but after that, the team is wide open. The trouble is which ones of our freshmen are in line? I think Mullins will make the team, and maybe QMB and even Murphy have a chance?
Women should be a different matter. If it's 8 on the 1st team again, Erica and Mulkey are locks (with Ogwumike as player of the year). And I really hope Iademarco makes 2nd team. And I hope Jasmine Smith makes the freshman team, and both Erica and Mulkey make the defensive team. And Langley gets coach of the year.

Mulkey also should get Newcomer of the Year. Erica won it last year.

Think Erica and Mulkey are probably both deserving of defensive accolades, especially because Erica always gets the other team's best player, but I think Wiggins should probably get consideration on defense. She's incredibly smart and active on that end of the floor.

Rice is the only school with two first-teamers. Awesome.

Erica got hosed not being on all-defensive team for 2nd straight year.
And it will be highway robbery if we don't sweep the awards: POY (Erica), Newcomer of the Year (Nancy), Coach of the Year (Tina).

My guess is there will be no men's hoops all conference team members chosen on the all-conference or all-defensive teams. Chris Mullins should make the all-freshmen team as a starter and Quentin Millora-Brown could make the 2nd team. Robert Martin may have a shot at 6th player of the year either first or second team selection.

I'd be shocked if we didn't get those POY, COY and NOY awards but those will be announced tomorrow. I don't think they'll have a 2nd team all-freshman group for the men, it will just be 5 players total. We'll see soon enough.
I'll have to check out those 5 freshmen on the women's team. Jasmine Smith probably was deserving there but I know she didn't win any weekly awards during the season so maybe there was a lot of competition this season?

Women's Awards
Freshman of the Year
Taylor Sutton, Middle Tennessee
Defensive Player of the Year
Nancy Mulkey, Rice
Newcomer of the Year
A’Queen Hayes, Middle Tennessee
Sixth Player of the Year
Lauren Grigsby, Rice
Didn't realize Hayes was a newcomer. She did play more games than Mulkey so not totally mad about the selection.
Happy for Grigsby with the 6th player award!
COY and POY will be named tomorrow.
Quote:Mulkey cemented herself as one of the nation’s most elite centers in her first season with Rice. Despite missing the first eight games due to injury, the sophomore played catch up and now leads all C-USA players and ranks 17th in the country with 72 blocks, which also rank fourth among the school’s single-season records. Her 3.60 average blocks nearly qualify as the second-best shot blocking clip in the country. Mulkey has already established herself in Owl history as the single-game blocking record holder (9), and is the nation’s only player to record eight or more blocks in three games this season. She is also impactful on the offensive side of the ball and is on pace to shatter the single-season field goal percentage record while leading C-USA at a 59 percent mark. The Cypress, Texas, product claimed a C-USA Player of the Week award in January and has since powered the Owls to the NCAA’s sixth-best scoring defense (52.9).
Grigsby’s leadership as a senior and supporting role off the bench has propelled Rice forward in its fight to make history. In 28 games played, the guard ranks in the team’s top five in nearly every impactful category on both sides of the ball. She especially shines from beyond the arc and ranks second on the squad with 1.3 made threes a game at a 43 percent clip. Grigsby is averaging 7.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists heading into the postseason.

RE: Basketball all-conference teams
The rest of the all conference players for men's hoops were announced this afternoon, Unfortunately, Robert Martin lost out to Florida Atlantic graduate forward Xavian Stapleton and sophomore guard LaDavius Draine of Southern Miss for 6th player of the year. Both had numbers very close to Robert's, although each were slightly better than Martin's overall. Draine was particularly impressive with only 11 turnovers all season, compared to 49 for Robert.
