Roster Building philosophy
What do you think is the best method?

Type One - Selective/Developmental

Pros: Lack of transfers, and continuity through the years. Encourages good team chemistry. Your team will likely be very consistent with this method and will result in consistent positive results.

Cons: Talent cannot be upgraded when needed. Teams become to rigid with feeling the need to fit certain players into certain positions, rather than just playing the best players to win the game. Creates an atmosphere of comfort amongst the players, knowing their playing time is set as long as they have put in the time. These teams will be consistent, but will rarely make huge waves.

Type 2 - Stockpile Talent

Pros: The talent level will be better, as the coach will likely have recruited over players that didn't pan out. This method will also encourage returning players to improve their game as they know they will risk being passed up.

Cons: Potential for a revolving door with transfers. Could create some bad mojo on the recruiting trail if you garnered a reputation for pushing players out. Chemistry may not be as good.

3rd option- modified version of both.

I believe this to be the best method. I do not think it is good business to be straight up telling kids to leave. But there is nothing wrong with creating some competition in certain situations and not be afraid to go after a certain player. I know that we were heavily involved with Nate Hinton prior to Logan Johnson commiting, who knows if Cronin stopped recruiting him after that, but I still would have sold Hinton on playing time here because he is a talented player.

RE: Roster Building philosophy
I think the key is option one with an increased talent pool. More top 150 guys and high end transfers.

I keep thinking a guy like Fredricks and Broome belongs on the 2007 Bearcats not 2019 team. This would be elite team if Evans had returned, our senior pg transfer was all conference, or late spring we added a stud instead of a bench player.

RE: Roster Building philosophy
Jarr you are ahead of yourself. Before your questions can be entertained we must first do the following Three Step Plan:

Step One:
Acknowledge you have a problem.
eg. “Hi, my name is Mick, and I can’t coach offense.“

Step Two: Get Help
Hire an offensive wizard as asst. coach and let him install the team’s offensive plan. Will need to agree to scrap the 1994 GCL league offense, but will be so worth it.

Step Three: Get Scorers
eg. Recruit guys who can put the ball in the hole and will do so inside the framework of a modern dynamic offense.

Once this is all done, THEN we can proceed with your discussion.

The Type 2 con really doesn't add up for me at all, as basically everyone else in the country does it. Would doing this on occasion ONLY be held against UC and nobody else? Plus it's not like we are seeing any actual advantage or benefit on the recruiting trail by not recruiting over players that aren't good enough for this level. If anything it's holding us back come March.

Did Mick recruit Miles McBride from Moeller who is going to West Virginia next year.
Long time since we had a player out of the GCL.

Trivia Question: Name the four players from the GCL (two from one school) who were the Bearcats MVP for a season in our history?

I went to a GCL school, so pardon me if I ask for clarification on your last question, but...

Can we name four players from the last ten to twenty years of GCL history who were elite college basketball players?

Bobby Brannen was the only GCL player of any skill UC has had in the last 30 years.

If we're going back thirty years, Keith Gregor (Lakota West) was one of my favorite players to watch in the early Huggins' days. He made watching/playing defense fun. Huggins put Gregor on the other teams's best scorer and more often than not, Keith would shut them down.

He was Huggins first major recruiting coup I believe. National Top 30-35 prospect if my memory serves me correctly. That 90-91 Lakota team he played on was awesome. I was young then but it seems like they might have made it all the way to the state finals. They had that huge dude on that team as well who played at Syracuse I think.
