Another defense of Carlson, from someone who doesn't seem to like him much.
"...This was the point at which Carlson short-circuited the cycle. Just when he was supposed to prostrate himself, he did not. He was supposed to apologize, those who were offended were to reject his apology, and a new news cycle could start about the thing he said, the apology he proffered, and the career damage he sustained when no one accepted his apology.
Joan Rivers used to do this regularly and I admired it. I wouldn't have told many of the jokes Rivers told, but I also wasn't interested in punishing her for telling them.
In 2014, Rivers told a joke that referenced three women recently rescued from a basement in Cleveland where they'd been held captive for a decade. There was an uproar, apologies were demanded, and she simply said no.
"I know what those girls went through. It was a little, stupid joke. There is nothing to apologize for. I made a joke. That's what I do. Calm down. Calm f------ down. I'm a comedienne. They're free, so let's move on."
Those who were interested in being outraged were forced to move on to something else...."
