RE: Do any white people on this forum have very little interaction with minorities?
Up until I was about 12 I grew up on army bases so I had the ultimate in diversity exposure, our classrooms were integrated with White's, Blacks, Latino's Asians, Middle Easterners, a lot from the Philippine's, just a genuine melting pot. When we settled back in Memphis I got along better with blacks than did most of my friends and Memphis family. I've lived in Memphis on and off ever since then with a couple of stops along the way in Atlanta and Nashville. I've never felt racial tension in Memphis as keenly as I did in either of those cities, ever. I've traveled extensively and in my own opinion, based on personal observation and interactions, there are less racially divisive issues in the south than exists elsewhere around the country. I interact with people of various ethnicity and backgrounds now almost daily and I think nothing of it. I treat them all, white, black, brown, yellow, rainbow, whatever, respectfully as customers with green in their pocket but more importantly simply as fellow human beings who share far more in common than the powers-that-be would have any of us believe.

Only white people now. There will be a separate (but equal) minority thread later this week. Thanks for participating.

This is why I only completed half of a post.

I grew up in a metro area of 1.3 million people where essentially half are black...so no, I've grown up in a place where minorities are the majority.

I would think most of us deal with all races, religions and ethnicities, to some degree.
My father taught me to treat everyone with respect and with a high level of fairness. Always.

Race, religion etc. don't factor into to that equation if you respect people and treat everyone fairly.

I'm 54 and think the 70s and 80s were simpler and easier times. So much better than today, in every way.

With that caveat, I grew up in 100% white Catholic grade schools, and a 99.5% white Catholic high school.

The only black person at my high school was born in Greece and her parents were wealthy Nigerians. My principal realized the lack of diversity and arranged for 4 Japanese exchange students one year.

Then I went to college in East Cleveland. The students and faculty were 20% Asian/80% white, and the staff was maybe 50% black. I'm ashamed to say it, but living in East Cleveland changed me from someone who didn't see color to someone who had a knee-jerk negative reaction to black people. Many of them (far less than half, but enough to matter) were racist as hell to white students. There was even one restaurant off campus where whites would not get served. I started unconsciously picking the white cashier at the grocery because there was a good chance the service would be awful if I picked the black one. I didn't even realize I was doing this until after college when I moved to inner city Cincinnati and had several outstanding interactions with black workers. The positive interactions surprised me, and I realized that it only surprised me because I had become a bit racist myself.

It made me realize that racism breeds racism in a vicious cycle.

Today I work in academia. In my last department (15 people) I was the only native-born American white. In my current department it's about 1/2 native-born American whites, 1/3 Asian, and the rest are from Eastern Europe.

Nowadays, my best friend is an Iranian-Canadian.

The fact is, there are some racists on both sides and given that there are more white people in the country, likely more white racists than black/other racists.

With that said, I suspect the vast majority of folks go about their daily lives, interact with people of different races/ethnicities, and are cordial and polite - meaning while not being best friends, pretty much everyone gets along.

Problem is, the MSM will search countrywide everyday to find the few instances where things weren’t cordial or polite and plaster them all over the airwaves/internet. They’ve learned that racism sells and push that narrative to the max for clicks/ views.

Think of your daily interactions and how they are as compared to the media’s portrayals. Most will agree they aren’t the same.........
