Former Monarch Basketball assistant
Former Monarch assistant coach Lonnie Blow is doing great things at Virginia State. CIAA Coach of the year, 23-3 record. He is getting a lot of help from former Monarch great Drew Williamson to boot. We should keep an eye on Coach Blow and Drew !

Former ODU assistant Travis DeCuire has his Montana team heading into their conference tournament as the #1 seed, as well.

Not to tap into my inner DavidSt here but I wonder if VSU has given thought to moving up and joining the MEAC. The new arena and older football stadium are certainly good enough for the MEAC or another low-major conference. I think they've had enrollment and financial issues before (not sure where they are now), and I have no idea if it's even worth it to move up from the CIAA and leave Virginia Union behind since they'll never move up, but the MEAC would probably like to have a second Virginia school again, particularly one on the I-95 corridor.

To pile on, former Monarch HC Blaine Taylor is an asst at UC Irvine and they won the Big West Conference regular season with a record of 25-5 (13-1). They are on an 11 game win streak

Im not sure its worth it. NSU lost support when it joined the MEAC and HU just left to go to the Big South. Comparing the CIAA to the MEAC is about the same as comparing the CAA and CUSA, which in my mind certainly is no slam dunk.

I’m happy to see ex-Monarch assistants doing well. Who knows DeCuire could be our next HC; of course he might have been hired by another school by then. It could be several years or more until we’re in the market for a new HC. Jones is not on a hot seat, and hopefully he will make a full recovery. We shall see.

Drew...one of my top 5 Monarchs of all time.
If Coach Stith doesn't end up taking aver for JJ, my vote is for Travis to become our coach and have him bring in Drew as assistant.

I would love nothing better than Jones getting healthy and coaching for the next few years. Having said that, the uncertainty does hurt us to a certain degree. Don't be surprised if we are on the lookout sooner, rather than later.

RE: Former Monarch Basketball assistant
My oncologist is a Syracuse grad and has a daughter at ODU. We talk a lot about ODU, Jones, and cancer. Jones is an inspiration for so many people! Many people get that kind of news and just shut down after being told there is nothing more that can be done. I look at Jones as an inspiration since my battle. I never wanted Jones as a coach after Taylor but I truly admire him now for what he is doing for ODU, on the court, and in his private life. I think Wood is going to let Jones write his last chapter at ODU. I don't foresee him leaving any other way than to retire on his own terms.

I hope ODU has Bryant Stith or another coach on standby for when Jones decides to walk away from basketball. We all know the day is coming but not when.
