Legitimate question: what are people expecting while we’re stuck in this conference? Rob is playing with the hand he’s been dealt, bad attendance, bad conference, “meh” facilities, etc. Until we get out of this conference, or up the funding (a lot), expecting anything other than what we’ve gotten this year is crazy.

Stop blaming the conference, Wofford and buffalo seem to make it work. Agree Ehsan needs to go

I must have missed where those two are regular contenders for an NCAA At-Large bid.

I still don't understand the logic of blaming the conference. I'd get it if we were playing great OOC and dominating the conference portion of our schedule and being left out of the NCAA tournament the way MTSU was last year or ODU was a few years ago, but we're not. We struggle to stay around. 500.

They’re consistently not terrible, unlike us under Ehsan

Look how long their coach has been there. Look how long he was retained. We are not terrible, we are average. Coaching was an issue early in Ehsan’s tenure, now the issue is recruiting. We have glaring needs that every fan can see, and it doesn’t appear we are addressing them. I have seen a lot I’ve liked from the team and staff this year. I’ve seen a lot that needs more improvement. I’m not thrilled with where the program is at the moment but I do have hope for next year, unlike how I felt going into this season.

I really would like for everyone to compare Ehsan’s tenure to Haase’s first 3 years.

Well by year 3 Haase was in the NCAA tournament. Hasse also had to rebuild the team, he didnt inherit a team that went 26-7 the year before.

Haase had Robert Brown to save his haase, Ehsan does not.

With Robert Brown on an Ehsan team no one would be complaining right now.

All this talk of canning Ehsan is crazy. Its acceptable to do in this forum but the same folks are repeating the same things.

Unless somebody digs up 100lbs of gold and dumps it into our Basketball program, Ehsan aint' going nowhere.. (IMHO)

Ehsan also doesn't have the Kansas & UNC background that Haase had to help in recruiting and his teams being considered for the tournaments. I doubt that AD Ingram's door is being pounded on by top young coaches so I expect we will keep who we have for the next two seasons regardless of being "average".

bull****. No one player changes that our players are not taught and held accountable for executing basic team defensive principles.
Force a ball handler to his weak hand if he has one.
Don't help off of good three point shooters.
Force the ball handler to help instead of giving him a free lane.
Go over screens on good shooters, not under them.
Communicate on defense to call out off-ball screens as well as ball screens.

These are things that decently coached high school teams do as a matter of course that we routinely do not do and I'm tired of watching it.

Opposing coaches love playing against us because we are so easy to scheme against. It's sickening when game after game I hear opposing coaches say on their post game interviews some variation of "We felt good heading into the game because we saw some things on tape we thought we could exploit."

They know they can get their best players the ball in their favorite spots because we simply dont try and deny those spaces to them. They know they can get open 3's for their best shooters pretty much whenever simply by having their best shooter stand on the wing and running a simple pick and roll to that side knowing full well we will help off of a 40% three point shooter the same way we would help off of a 25% shooter (not that other teams have 25% three point shooters standing on the wing, only we do that.)

Our expectations as a fan base are so low that we have fallen to feeling good about losing games jus because we stayed close. We were wildly celebrating sneaking into a back-door tie for 5th place of the 14th ranked conference heading into pod play like we were rooting for the Flint Tropics or something.

The BlazerTalk equivalent of the Santelli Rant. Should be pinned.

Thanks for telling it like it is, Matt. You speak for a large majority of UAB supporters. The empty seats at Bartow speak even louder.

I disagree that the team was ever rebuilt after the Mike Davis play-in game. Recruiting has been pitiful overall. Robert Brown was the guy, transfer. Chris Cokley was turned away by Andy Kennedy, had no business playing in a conference as bad as cusa. Zack Bryant is the only legitimate D1 player on the current team and now two years have passed, Lovan is making his way there. Unless UAB sneaks in the top 4 over the next couple of games, it will have finished 5th or worse in cusa standings in 6 of the last 8 years. Use that as a measuring stick.

The conference is a legitimate excuse for many things. Recruits don’t want to play in it, fans don’t care to see it, schools don’t care enough to invest in their own programs, teams play a *****y nonconference sked and still don’t do well which makes it difficult for the teams that do go on a run with a decent SOS to get a bid because their resumes get killed by their conference mates.

We’re in a no win situation. Basketball does have to be good for us to be taken in the next round of realignment, if there is one. And we need to be in a better conference, to have a chance of our basketball program surviving and/or thriving. Taking Ls, to schools that recruits don’t even know are D1 certainly doesn’t help in recruiting. No, playing Memphis, UConn, Cincy, a top 25 Houston, SMU, or UCF won’t sellout Bartow. Do think it would bring back some of the fans that have been lost since the middle of Mike Davis’ tenure.

Does Ehsan have some legit gripes about struggles in recruiting? I guess. However, there are other mid majors in our league, other conferences who are doing a lot better than us in developing players and coaching with a lot less resources, a lot less talent, and much worse facilities.

I give some legitimacy to some excuses on not being able to compete with the high major schools or the better mid majors annually. However, I haven’t brainwashed myself into believing this league is good and deep. It’s complete trash, and not being in the top 2-3 is unacceptable.

RE: UTSA Game Thread
I was wondering how you’d go about a conversation with a recruit about what’s currently going on. Obviously, Coach would do most of the talking.

Coach: Yeah, we’re currently playing to get a bye in the first round of our conference tournament.
Recruit: cool, what happened your last game?
Coach: We lost to UTSA.
Recruit: Coach, I thought you said y’all were D1?

That’s the type of reaction I expect to be in recruits minds.
