Yup. It's a good argument for either larger divisions or fewer games within the division.

Would be interesting if they expanded the MLB to 32 teams and separated each league into two divisions of eight, thereby emulating the pre-expansion era (frequent cross-division and interleague play notwithstanding). Could take the top two teams from each division and have the best remaining record play a wild card against the worst of those top four. Would prevent the Twins situation from coming up, though you might incentivize tanking and reduce competitive balance because you almost certainly take away the prospect of a mediocre team suddenly contending in a weak division.

when they go to 32 it'll be 8 of 4.

I hope not. There are too many baseball games for such small divisions.

Not only that some team will win a division with a less than .500 record.

I agree with this but should caveat by saying that Roberts sometimes makes choices we don't understand, so "far quicker hook" could easily have Dodgers fans asking WTF for longer than you'd expect.

Nailed it.

lol.... That's pretty.... sad. If Nats jump up 3-4 to 0, Dodger fans are going to be killing him for sure.

you just wonder if the Nats and Rays win the next 2 days, is there going to be any talk about the WC/LDS situation. If it happens, WC teams would be 8-8 in the LDS round, and 34-34 in games played in that period.

Like making LDS 7 games? I hope not. Honestly, this is what makes playoffs more fun and interesting.

I'm serious - if the Dodgers lose I'm not gonna be pounding the table screaming about 106 win teams losing in the first round. I'm gonna be pounding on the table insisting that Friedman do something to improve the team. I'm actually a little conflicted right now: As much as I'd rather the Dodgers win, I'm certain (as I think most are) they'd be a WS underdog if they make it that far (and it's NY or HOU as the opponent). But I'm afraid that if they DO make it that far and lose we'll hear the same thing from management: "Our system is working, our guys are terrific; no need to change/spend/etc. Just a few tweaks." I'm not on board with this. I don't want wholesale change but I'd like to see ownership use it's financial wherewithal to bring in at least one big free agent this offseason. Turner's not getting younger and the young guys are still pretty young (witness Bellinger trying to hit an HR every pitch in the second half). Kershaw's on the downslope, and I don't know what the hell Jansen is. Help IS needed to keep up with the Yankees and Astros.

I know GoodOwl is gonna crucify me for all this whining but this runner-up **** is getting tired.

Totally get what you're saying. Do think this year is a big year of change for you guys regardless- especially pitching side with Ryu and Hill probably gone. Are they going to be willing to go in with Buehler, Kershaw, and then the kids/Maeda? When local guy Cole is out there? Like you said, Jansen? Next year last year with Turner. Pederson a FA after next year.

RE: 2019 MLB Thread
what I find so great about the Nats should we survive(and same could be said for the Dodgers).... they haven't really worked the pitchers to the bone....

so far this postseason- assuming 7 for Stras tonight and then 1 ea for Hudson and Doolittle.....
Strasburg 16 innings
Scherzer 13 innings
Corbin 7 innings
Sanchez 5 innings
Hudson 3.2 innings
Doolittle 3.1 innings

that's not exactly overworked at all.

I'd LIKE it to be a year of change but I'm worried it won't be. Hill almost certainly is gone unless he just really wants to be in LA and is willing to take a tiny salary. With Ryu, I worry the Dodgers re-sign him and say "See - we went after a big FA!" But yes, I could also see them saying that between Urias, May and Gonsolin they've already got a glut of starters for 2020 and nothing is needed. And I could be ok with that if they go after Will Smith or Will Harris (Chapman is a non-starter I think) AND go after an OF or 1B (or, if I'm REALLY dreaming - Rendon, and move Turner to 1B).

That's an interesting question.

He's at 33 pitches thru two. Many more and it won't matter too much.

Imagine though he gets pulled, and the Braves come back...

I don’t know who will pay Hill. He is not that great, he is old, with a very long injury history.

Not exactly the start Strasburg wanted, and 22 pitches. If you have to go to the pen, it has to be Sanchez and Corbin. Really can't be Scherzer, except in an extreme situation.

Maybe it's just a random bad outing, but this is why I'd rather face Strasburg twice and Scherzer once.

Scherzer had an outing this postseason where he gave up 3 in the 1st 2 innings....

Yes, but he seemed to still be building back. Again, maybe it's just a bad outing at a bad time. But if you're asking if I'd rather face peak strasburg or peak scherzer, it's a no-brainer.

But now it's time for the Nats bats to step up. We spend a lot of time talking about pitching, but some bats have not stepped up in the postseason. The Braves series should've been over in 4 games, but the Braves couldn't get a runner home from 2nd with no outs in one inning, or a runner home from third with one out in another. And the Astros bats haven't stepped up either. At some point you need to score runs

man, Kendrick has had a rough series.....

Nats bats have been meh. First off some great pitchers on the other side. but not taken full advantage when had chances..... knew it would take at least 4-5 runs.... If Stras could get a DP he's only at 45 right now.... Still can go 6.
