wbb at Toledo
TODAY (Sat., March 2) at Toledo 1 p.m., Savage Arena

Sked says ESPN3
Also WSQR 1180 am

MAC: NIU 9-6, Toledo 9-6
Overall: NIU 17-10, Toledo 17-9

Game Notes: Both strong at home...NIU is 12-2, Toledo is 10-3 (including a loss to then-#2 Notre Dame)....Toledo is averaging 4,002 attendance per game (13 games/Savage Arena official capacity 7,014)....NIU drew 1,305 to a 54-52 win over Rockets on Feb. 16 at the Convo....Toledo athletic website has a "countdown clock" overlay for this game = heavy promotion.

MAC Standings prior to today's games:

Miami-Ohio, CMU -- 12-3
Ohio -- 11-4
Buffalo -- 10-5
NIU, Toledo, Kent State -- 9-6
Akron -- 7-8
EMU -- 5-10
WMU -- 3-12
Ball State -- 2-13
BGSU -- 1-14

With NIU, KSU and UT all at 9-6, it is possible one might squeak in to the top 4, of course depending on what also happens with Buffalo. The Bulls' 3 remaining games are at home vs. Miami-O today, and BGSU home and KSU away next week. Big game vs. Miami (12-3) today, also at 1 p.m. cst.

Games after: NIU home vs. Ball State Weds March 6, at WMU Sat March 9; Toledo at EMU March 6, at CMU March 9

MAC Tournament begins March 11 at campus sites.

A tough one today but what a nice chance to make a statement. This is a very good basketball conference and there seem to be definite tiers within it, good opportunity to stake claim as the top of the second tier.

Honesty compels me to expect a tough one today----frittered away a nice lead against Toledo at home a couple of weeks ago and needed an end of the game basket to win.

Despite the injuries and short bench Lisa continues to shine. Good luck ladies. I can watch your game, check the halftime score of the men and decide if I should tune into the end of that one.

RE: wbb at Toledo
NIU 28-27 at the half. Was down by 7 but good defense and shots began to fall.

BGSU just put Kent State on shaky ground for the 5th seed, winning at home 62-49. KSU now 9-7.

Mikayla Voigt just scored her 18th point, passing Courtney Woods for 7th all-time scoring.

Unless the world ends, Buffalo looks to solidify its place in the top 4. After 3, leads Miami-O by 30, 72-42.

Toledo leads at end of 3, 47-41.

Next recruiting class is very important. Can we find a difference maker?

Correct. They do a good job with what they have but this staff didn’t recruit Woods and Voight, inherited Lehman. Poisson was trending into a game changer but got derailed by knee injuries. Starks has shown flashes over 2 1/2 years. Other than that they have not recruited much offensively for being an offensive driven program.

They need a very good class coming in and possibly catch luck with a transfer that can contribute. They will get Woods & Poisson back for next year.

They shot themselves in the foot all day today. At least 6 passes were, essentially, right to Toledo players and the three point shooting was horrific. Voigt even had an weak day at the free throw line.

I wonder how much of a recruiting budget Carlsen has to work with. It can't be easy, when NIU is surrounded by UIC, DePaul, Loyola, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Iowa, Northern Iowa, etc. (I was amazed to learn that Iowa State can draw 8,000 to 9,000 for a wbb game.) And in general, prospective students are not exactly beating down Northern's doors to get in. Northern needs something to brag about, a fresh recruiting tool. I'm hoping for another bid to the post-season NIT.
