NFL Combine predictions for SS
Excited to see Sutton Smith show off his meathead skills. I’m predicting he’ll be top 3 on the bench press and be the fastest of all the linebackers/ lineman. Any predictions for you all?

What scouts are looking for:

40-yard dash
The 40-yard dash is the marquee event at the combine. It's kind of like the 100-meters at the Olympics: It's all about speed, explosion and watching skilled athletes run great times. These athletes are timed at 10, 20 and 40-yard intervals. What the scouts are looking for is an explosion from a static start.

Bench press
The bench press is a test of strength -- 225 pounds, as many reps as the athlete can get. What the NFL scouts are also looking for is endurance. Anybody can do a max one time, but what the bench press tells the pro scouts is how often the athlete frequented his college weight room for the last 3-5 years.

Vertical jump
The vertical jump is all about lower-body explosion and power. The athlete stands flat-footed and they measure his reach. It is important to accurately measure the reach, because the differential between the reach and the flag the athlete touches is his vertical jump measurement.

Broad jump
The broad jump is like being in gym class back in junior high school. Basically, it is testing an athlete's lower-body explosion and lower-body strength. The athlete starts out with a stance balanced and then he explodes out as far as he can. It tests explosion and balance, because he has to land without moving.

3 cone drill
The 3 cone drill tests an athlete's ability to change directions at a high speed. Three cones in an L-shape. He starts from the starting line, goes 5 yards to the first cone and back. Then, he turns, runs around the second cone, runs a weave around the third cone, which is the high point of the L, changes directions, comes back around that second cone and finishes.

Shuttle run
The short shuttle is the first of the cone drills. It is known as the 5-10-5. What it tests is the athlete's lateral quickness and explosion in short areas. The athlete starts in the three-point stance, explodes out 5 yards to his right, touches the line, goes back 10 yards to his left, left hand touches the line, pivot, and he turns 5 more yards and finishes.

RE: NFL Combine predictions for SS
Here's Sutton's DraftScout profile. Not much seems to have been updated (other than height/weight measurables) after the Senior Bowl where, I believe, his stock dropped a bit. Hopefully he has a great showing at the NFL Combine to pull his stock back up.

Sutton Smith: Draft Scout profile

Their preliminary projections had Sutton as a potential 3rd Rounder at the OLB position. They have him ranked 8/184 OLBs and 99 overall out of 2028 scouted players.

As noted above, his height/weight listed here was taken from the Senior Bowl where he measured at 6' and 3/8ths" and weighed in at 234lbs.

One thing that I notice immediately was they are heavily short-changing his 40-time. They are projecting a 4.74 with a range of 4.65 - 4.85. Yeah, no f*cking way. I believe he's been timed in the 4.5s or even 4.4s. Even if he's lost a step of straight-line speed due to added bulk, I still think he runs somewhere in the 4.5s at the very least. That should help give him a bump.

Looking at the Top 10 OLBs:
http://www.draftscout.com/ratings/player...&order=ASC

Sutton is probably closer, in size/speed (actually bigger and faster), to Florida's Vosean Joseph rated 4th among OLBs.

I also agree that Sutton will go full meathead and crush the bench press drill. Also think he'll do quite well at some of the agility drills.

2019 NFL Combine profile:
Sutton has been given a rating of 5.26 as an Edge Rusher prospect.

https://www.nfl.com/prospects/sutton-smi...9db721f480

Sutton Smith measurables:
HT: 6' 0 3/8"
WT: 233 lbs.
Arms: 30 3/4”
Hands: 9"
Wingspan: 73 1/2"

While I don't usually put a lot of emphasis on many of the combine activities, I think for Sutton, the bench is important. There's plenty of teams that are going to be worried about his size (that he'll just get overrun by TE's or G's pulling). A good showing there would help a bit to squash some of that.

RE: NFL Combine predictions for SS
Since it appears the general consensus around the football world after the senior bowl was that Sutton can't really handle NFL OT's, he's going to have to impress more with his speed and quickness. While he will crush the bench press for sure, I'm not sure any scouts are looking for him to use strength to be effective at the next level. Don't get me wrong, it will help his stock, but he's going to have to show he's a great athlete. My guesses with what I think he needs to have a good showing.

Most important:

40 yd = 4.58 (needs 4.65 min)
Shuttle run = 4.15 (needs 4.25 min)

Next important:

3-cone = 6.79 (needs 7.00 min)

Least important:

Vert. = 34 (needs 28)
Bench = 34 (needs 20)
Broad J = 118 (needs 112)

RE: NFL Combine predictions for SS
The best combine comp for Sutton I've found from last year was Memphis LB Genard Avery(went 5th round to Cleveland. Very productive College career) He crushed the combine in a way Sutton will need to.

Avery is 6'1" 248

40 = 4.59
shuttle = 4.36
3-cone = 6.9
vert = 36
bench = 26
broad J = 124

Along with Oren Burks and Leighton Vanderesch, probably the most impressive combine results for any LB. But Burks and Vader Esch are 6'3", and 6'4".

To short. Too small.

Mike Singletary. 5’ 11”. 230 lbs

He was a pretty good player wouldn’t you say!

I'm comparing him to Hassan Reddick...undersized Edge Rusher out of Temple...6'1 and 237 lbs...ran a 4.52

Reddick is probably a perfect comp for Sutton’s NFL career. Looking up his pre draft analysis. “Reddick's speed and athleticism might give him a greater shot at impacting the game as a 3-4 inside linebacker or a 4-3 WILL rather than trying to bulk up and play the edge.“

40 YARD DASH: 4.52 SEC
BENCH PRESS: 24 REPS
VERTICAL JUMP: 36.5 INCH
BROAD JUMP: 133.0 INCH
3 CONE DRILL: 7.01 SEC
20 YARD SHUTTLE: 4.37 SEC

He’s now a 4-3 OLB for the Cards and doing great. I

I agree. One thing that the NFL has never been able to measure is heart.

I'd like to talk about Max at the Combine here too, unless someone wants to start a new dedicated thread. I don't think that's necessary.

Draft Scout lists Max as the 11/97 OT and 137/2028 overall out of scouted players. Projected as a 4th Round pick.

Max is listed as a Top 9 OT of those OTs invited to the 2019 NFL Combine, with a 5.80 rating.

From the Senior Bowl:

HT: 6' 5 7/8"
WT: 320 lbs.
Arms: 33 3/4”
Hands: 9 3/4”

Hopefully, Max gets whatever he needs on the bench press drill. In the past, I know that results from OL have been disappointing to say the least. Max's footwork and technique I think will shine through, as they did at the Senior Bowl.

Conspiracy. It's so they can give him a lower rating (only 5.26 as an Edge prospect). They would almost have to give him a higher rating as an OLB prospect. I blame the Bears.
