RE: NFL Combine predictions for SS
A little good news. Official 40 times are now listed. Sutton was 4.69. Good for a tie at 10th.

I think all this is adding up to where most of us thought he'd be, and that's a late round pick, maybe topping out at 4th or 5th. He'll get his chance at a roster. He hasn't done anything to change that.

31.5" Vertical

9'-10" Broad Jump.

6.75 sec in the 3-Cone Drill. Top score among DL (EMU's Crosby with the 2nd best score) and faster than all the RBs. This is the QUICKNESS in his game.

This is why he should have come back. Play some olb, hybrid stuff, coverage. Teams love that stuff. Hes not a genetic freak so more time to show versatility.

He was too good as a D-End..... They would not have played him at Linebacker to help him raise his stock.

It’s all hindsight at this point, but another year may have been the right call if he doesn’t go until the last round or two. If not just for the fact that his position is stacked in this draft.

People always talk about the money of NFL (with none of it being guaranteed) and him not going in the early rounds, money should never have been the issue. I think cementing himself as a legend (breaking sack and tfl records) in both NIU and the MAC, not to mention the fun of dominating a final year, would have been well worth him staying. But hindsight is...

Again routing for him and wish him the best, but selfishly I wanted him back another year.

For those that missed Sutton Smith running his 40. Looked fast for a 4.69 : https://twitter.com/nfl/status/1102554578304696321?s=21

Yep. He looked fast. And several of those with faster times looked slower than him.

His ten yard split was terrible. 1.72. Bosa was 1.60. So was EMU guy. He lost .12 just getting started. So his final 30 yards was faster than most. What that tells me is that he didn’t train how to get out of the blocks correctly.

Meh, if you have a dream, and have a shot at that dream, you take the shot. From everything he says and in that article, his dream is the NFL, take your shot when you get it. Especially in football, you're one bad hit/bad cut/etc away from being done. Sure, could have pumped his stock up and put a little more on video, but also plenty of other bad things could have happened.

He's at the NFL combine, he got to play in one of the senior bowl things, he's getting his shot.

Why not? He's basically a olb now. We can see how this new d coordinator operates but the trend that last few years has been to disguise coverages. So have him stand in 2 point stance then drop in coverage would not be far fetched. I think he would accel at that also.

RE: NFL Combine predictions for SS
Did the combine help, hurt or do nothing for Sutton? IMO it hurt, but just a little. His best chance to get on the field next year was by rushing the passer. His getting listed at the edge for the combine was a big help to that. But then he did very poor in the most important edge rusher events. His 40 was fine. But his 10 was terrible. That 10 yard split is way more relevant for DE’s than the 40. Bosa had a terrible 40 time but he came out a big winner overall because his 10 yard split was awesome. Everything for the edge guys is about burst/explosion. That means 10 yard split, vertical, broad jump. Smith was close to last in the first two and very average in the third.

I know his 3-cone was amazing. But that’s viewed as one’s ability to change direction. IE a linebacker drill. This is where I think he really belongs at in the NFL. All his measurable scream inside linebacker. Yet all his skills scream rush the passer. Either way, I think teams will see him as a huge project to find where he fits because right now he’s not an edge guy by measureables or a linebacker by experience.

The end result is special teams for year one and maybe two. This probably has him at the end of the 5th or beginning of the 6th.

RE: NFL Combine predictions for SS
You're mischaracterizing his Broad Jump results.

Sutton finished in the Top 10, tied for 10th among DL out of 43 participants.

This is actually even better than it looks when you consider that height/leg length plays a part in the results. Being the shortest DL in the field of 43 should have been a disadvantage.

You're also underselling his performance in the position drills. Sutton was actually impressive in his simulated in-game situational drills. Showed explosiveness, great reaction, and fluid change of direction.

Overall, I was hoping and expecting a better performance so in that way it was dissapointing but I don't know if/how much he actually hurt his draft stock. The biggest question marks with him (size, new position change) remain regardless of combine performance.

Actually I characterized his broadjump maybe too favorable. I called it average when I maybe should have said slightly below average.. 7 participants did better. Only 5 did worse. That’s from the edge rushers catagory. Not entire D line. Height isn’t as important as weight. They will speak of impressive Broad jumps from 280+ pound players. Not under 6’ players. The broad jump numbers for short players like RBs and WOs are greater than those of big tall D ends.

I’m not sure I heard anyone on the broadcast mention Sutton as a standout in position drills. Maybe he did. But that’s just an eye test. I’m sure most all the participants looked good in drills. Just never heard of anyone’s draft stock rising because he crushed the drills.

Didn’t imply you did. Just my opinion of the value of drills in the combine.
